DONE*Need How-To Tap Screen Replacement Guide For X50

Hello Ladies and Gents,
First and foremost I apologize for posting this here or even starting a new thread but I looked and I couldn't find anything on the site rgarding my question I know its in here somewhere but I couldn't find it.

Anyways here is the deal, I bought a damaged X50 for parts only and mainly just to fiddle around with it, open it up and see what makes it tick I bought it from ebay for $42.00 shipped the description said that the screen was damaged and the picture advertised showed an X50 with the LCD screen broken and with the black liquid everywehere. I received the X50 in the mail today and to my surprise only the Tap screen is damaged. After some research I found out that I can pirchase the replacement tap screen from PDAparts.com for $65.00 and replace it myself, I do realize that Pocket PC Techs. can do this for $150.00 but I want to try and do it myself and save some money and learn along the way. The only problem is that I don't want to open up the X50 and have no clue as to what to do next so if anybody can let me know where I can find the How-To guide (With Pictures)I would greately appreciate it.

Thanks, and hope everyone has a happy new year. :approve:

Can't help with the exact steps, but PDAParts has a guide for the X5 here. Also, make sure you are looking at the right part. The digitizer for the X50 is $60 while the x50v is $65!

Good luck!

I don't think this will give you specific instructions, but this guy has documented the disassembly of an X50v (with good pics). Hope it helps.

Aximsitex50icon Successful Digitizer Replacement for X50

Hello Guys,
In January I asked for your help regarding replacing the digitizer on an X50. Thanks to the help of some of you I got the neccesary info and vendor for the replacement and have made it happen. I know I slacked on it nearly two months but I have been rather busy. I purchase the digitizer from PDAparts.com and used the guide from x50vit.com and voila. I must admit that I was very skeptical and was pretty ceratain I was gonna have to scrap the X50 but it turned out to be easier than I anticipated. I realized how handy it can be to have a precision set of Torx drivers and screw drivers and overall patience. For the whole project I spent $44.00 for the damaged X50, $50.00 for the Digitizer, $6.00 for a Torx driver kit = $100.00

Now my PDA family consists of an X30 , X50 & X50v oh what joy. For anybody who has a damaged digitizer on their X50 model Ax and your warranty has expired, I would recommend that you give it a shot and fix it yourself and save you some $$$ and overall your Axim :approve:

Gutted!

I was considering replacing the digitizer myself on my axim but opted to send it off instead. I wasn't too keen on removing the digitizer with a razor blade and was also unsure how I was going to attach the new one... was some kind of adhesive supplied or were there peel off strips along the edges of your replacement?

Difference between broke screen and bad digitizer?

My screen just went out today; it doesn't respond to my taps. Is this a "damaged digitizer"? When the PDA is turned off I can see the irregular shape of a "dark liquid" underneath the surface, but everything looks normal when it's on. Is this a broken digitizer? I have an x3i

Tough to say. The "dark liquid" you mention would suggest a broken LCD but if you say that the image is fine then that can't be the case. Sounds like it's probably just a digitizer issue. Check out PDASmart.com's Axim X3 page. They supply a replacement digitizer for $75.00USD.

Hope this helps.

I've researched this more and I agree that the irregularly shaped dark liquid " shadow covering 1/2 the screen appears to be an LCD problem (I only see this when it is turned off). But I can't explain why my align screen looks okay. Of course, it doesn't display that much "data". Would the image would be worse if I was displaying a regular screen? I wish I knew.

The screen (digitizer) is not cracked or visibily damaged. It simply won't respond to my taps on the align mark.

PDAparts.com has a replacement screen for $50, but to replace the LCD jumps the parts price to $120. The latter cost doesn't make it worth repairing when Dell will send me a refurbished one (they implied it would be a new one from an opened box) for $170 (I got them down from $200).

Yeah, I would say that x3's are beyond economic repair these days,no matter what the problem. Probably cheaper and less hassle just to replace the unit.

Nonetheless, an interesting fault you have there. It seems to be a digitizer problem. Maybe the digitizer has come away from the lcd slightly and that's what's putting a darker "tint" to what you see when the unit is off. Does it look like a sort of "bubble" on your screen?

Just chuck it in the bin and get an X51V! :approve:
