constant memory issues

It's been a long time since I've visited this site, so I've kind of lost my way around: perhaps there is one good thread on this somewhere?

Anyway, despite that I run virtually no programs on my Dell X50, I seem to get constant memory issues. For example, I very frequently cannot run the email program and internet explorer programs at the same time.

At someone's suggestion, I installed MemMaid, and I run the quickclean periodically. I do not try to terminate many processes from the main MemMaid screen, though, because: (1) I have no idea what most of the processes are; and (2) I run so few programs that it seems kind of pointless.

Can anyone walk me through some basic steps here (or just direct me to another thread on point)? Maybe in the past six months (which was probably the last time I visited here) there have been some advances on this subject?

If you need more info about my system, ask away. Thanks.
