If you feel like screwing with it and seeing some improvement, read a few of the threads here (WM5 here to stay..., etc.). But the hard truth is that there are no complete fixes, just hacks that we have found to help somewhat.

Going back to the old OS is always an excellent option.

Stick with WM2003SE. It's stable and it works.

Give WM5 a year to settle down then, if you feel like tinkering, give it another shot.

Funny how we tinker with this stuff. We can't be satisfied that the thing works great as it is - we gotta monkey with it, don't we?

I used to do that, too, but recently (last year or so) I decided - time to just use the dang thing and quit futzing with it!

I tried WM5 one time... I ended up with a brick. I decided to just stick with 2003se (which runs like a champ) and be happy. Much like CodeBubba, I wanted to use the thing and not futz with all day long.

Funny, since making that decision I have so much software installed I can't tell you what they all do in detail... but I use them :approve:

Ok I have read about this issue time and time again and its about time to do something. As we all know from spam that we get from coworkers and various businesses the internet can spead anything faster than an STD in an orgy. I ask you all to look read and let me know if there is any other info in this PETITION that needs to be put in. Its about time WE put up and make DELL SPEAK UP! This is where we stand on the front line as MEN and shoot DELL right between the bottom line $$$. I enjoy my AXIM very much but I will no longer sit here and wait for someone in some other country to give me a scripted answer. Complaining amonst ourselves will NEVER get the problem solved and I am very sure DELL reps check this site and read our gripes. If you know of any and I mean ANY site that has something to do with POCKET PC's and even moreso DELL's I advise you to put this link in a message on a board and we will grow this campaign against big business to respond and react to customer issues. If the tech rep on the phone wont answer our issues, THEN we will make our issues known to the biggest group out there....THE INTERNET COMMUNITY! Let the VIRAL CAMPAIGN BEGIN see link!

I just wanted to comment that I upgraded to WM5 twice now. The first time was a headacke. It ran slow and the battery was HOT all the time. My SD card was disappairing. It seem that my PDA had a mind of it own. I went back to WM2003SE again.

I got tried of waiting for Microsoft and or Dell to realise the update patch. So I decided to give it another try. However this time I did my homework.

First I change my Desktop computer bias USB from 2.0 to 1.1. I can't remember where I read that Active Sync 4.0 has trouble with usb 2.0

Next I did a hard reset.

Then I installed WM5. (I was already running Active Sync 4.1)

The first program that I installed on my PDA was Tweaks2k2 and ran it.

Then I installed PHM Regedit

I went to the forum Aximsite WM5 is here to stay and did all the registory updates that was listed in Post 1. I also fixed the Active synce problem with the dummy server.

Outcome.
My Axim X50v is running just as fast as it did with WM2003se. Infact when I backup to my 4 gig Microdrive it takes less then 5 minutes. When I backup to my Scandisk SD card it takes around 12 minutes. That is backing up 47694.20kb

Disadvange.
I can not use my CF IBIZ Radio card. So far there is no drivers that support WM5.
I can not access my contact list is Webis mail at this time. But that problem should be fix in the very near future.

Weird stuff
.
Sometimes when I turn on my WIFI on the Axim it will hang tring to connect to my home network. To correct this I need to do a soft reset. This only happens a couple of times a week and I hadn't figure out what cause this.

Another issue is for some reason my Dell Axim is pulling in my proxy setting on my desktop computer. Note that WM2003SE also did this. Since I have only dialup avaiable to me out in the country here. I do use a Proxy Accelerator to help speed up a 28.8 k connections. However the Proxy does not work running PIE on my Axim X50. I go into my connecting setting and clear it out and then I can surf the web with my Axim again.

Other then that, I am very happy with WM5. It a shame that all these patches has to be done to get the Operating system to work correctly. It is also a shame that Microsoft or Dell hasn't reliese an update as of yet that fixed the problems of WM5 since they are fix able.

As you can see by the picture of my today screen I have my PDA heavly loaded with programs.

Excellent. That's great that you got the beast under control (even though you're going to have to wait awhile to get a couple of items fixed). Bravo! Enjoy it dude!

However, let me point out one thing. Those of us that have the technical saavy to go through 2 installs and follow a lengthy set of instructions in order to get our PPC to run acceptably with *only* two things still broken are still in the minority. Where Dell and Microsoft need to get it straight is that the vast majority of the people that would buy these devices do NOT have that expertise nor the patience nor do they want to. While it is certainly nice that we techo-nerds CAN fiddle with these boxes and make them do the Tango, our excitement is not shared by the majority of the users.

I gave a Pocket PC to my wife to use and it sits unused on her desk because it's just too much of a hassle for her to use. If it ain't the battery going dead (and losing her software) it's the paradigm shift she has to go through to work it in. She's used to using a 3-ring notebook that has all her "stuff" in it.

We will see Pocket PC's in more hands around us when they get to the point where someone can buy one, plug it into the computer - install a few applications and then just go use the thing for a couple of years. WM2003SE appears to be at that point now.

I'm sure that you view your move to WM5 as a victory - however considering what you had to go through to get there (2 installs and a bunch of tweaking) I think you've shown that WM5 has a ways to go before it can be considered "mainstream". As a techno-nerd I would have probably done the same as you (were I still inclined to) - but a normal user would not.

Most of us Aximsite users are massochists! <grin>
