Hmm WM5 Verdict

For those who have taken the plunge to WM5 from WM2003, can you advise me on the upgrade? I have read many postings from various sites and still don't know if this is for me. I frequently run out of battery life and frequently lose all data, it is very frustrating and time consuming. If I were to upgrade I would mainly be doing it for the battery RAM change in WM5, so if your battery dies your data a programs don't die with everything else. Please help? Advice? Should I buy a new Axim or just upgrade to WM5, I had read about quite a few problems, have these been worked out?

First of all, welcome to Aximsite!

Unless you just really need/want the upgrades, I'd stay where you are at. I have an X50v. I tried upgrading it to WM5 once. I was not happy with the results and so I've been back with 2003 ever since. I'm perfectly happy staying put until a fix comes out. If it ever does come out that is... Anyway, the choice is yours and yours alone. I personally would leave well enough alone.

Welcome to Aximsite!

WM5 still has its bugs. However, there seems to be fewer complaints about WM on X51 than on X50. WM5 in X51 is also better supported - there have been several ROM updates whereas there have been none for WM5 upgraded X50s.

If your main reason to upgrade to WM5 is persistent memory, then just invest in a good backup utility such as Sprite and do frequent backups. A restore after a hard reset takes no more than a couple of minutes.

I agree, especially since I am doing the reinstallation of PPC 2003 now. It's not worth sacrificing sanity, stability, and performance for 5.0. Also, it's not like 5.0 will do your laundry and take the kids to school.

Having WM5 on my X51v, I can tell you about atleast one draw back... Adobe Pocket Reader 2.0 doesn't like it... if you do PDF things and prefer Adobe, stay 2003

I upgraded mine... I backed up my rom, data, etc. all first... took out my memory cards (just in case :) )

Upgraded...

Loved the interface. System ran smoother. Installed my apps back onto it... Worked fine... Some of my games didn't run (booo :realmad: ) Having said that, some of my apps didn't work too! So i rolled back...

Maybe I'll try it again in a few months....

Upgraded to WM5 on my X50v and 2 hours later (the time taken to launch 1 app ;)) I was back to WM2003 A05. WM5 has many good points but it just doesn't work on the X50v without too many hacks and even then you're not guaranteed of a fully functioning & usable PDA.

And as for trying to get it to sync with Outlook... that was just a nightmare and it's an absolute must for me.

i'm one of those guys that stuck with the wm5 upgrade dispite all the crap...and now it's getting better.

with the activesync hack and shsmith's patch_filesys, it runs pretty smoothly, and i'm pretty happy with it. my only gripe is that battery life isn't as phenomally better than the 2003se as it's supposed to be (wm5 on the x51v has much better battery life)

I would stay with WM2003SE. WM5 is an upgrade in GUI only; WM5 has major drawbacks, you'll like it for about a week but then you'll get tired of the sluggish performance and crippled bluetooth. IMO WM2003SE is a much more polished OS.

the only prob I have is that I have a Mac at work... WM5 doesn't sync with missing sync or while using Virtual PC with Win XP Pro SP2...

win XP finds the device, but has a problem with the 'drivers' or some crap... so it doesn't actually work... sigh

I just went back to 2003 because my 50v turned into a paper weight. I understand there are patches, and addons and tons of other time consuming things you can do to tweak it and hack it to work, but its supposed to be a tool. For the money you pay, you should get a tool, not a toy to play with.

I rolled back, and everything works well, and im happy again. Its nice some like to WORK on their pda's, but most want to USE them. Not wondering what thing will happen today...will it boot? will i have to soft reset or hard reset.

I guess it comes down to, productivity or tinkering..

Not to mention the scary fact that the WM5 upgrade has turned many people's X50v's into unbooting bricks required to be sent to Dell for repair.

And that some of us are past warranty :(

Dell charges $250 if you're past warranty for this fuck-up of theirs.
