SORRY - I SHOULD HAVE POSTED THIS IN X50V

I bought one of these useless things over a year ago and have wasted hours trying to set it up. Initially bought to install and use SatNav when we drove to Rome. After a year I am no further forward. I bought a cradle for the car £30, I bought TOM TOM £100, I bought a portable Bluetooth GPS £90, I bought a Compact Flash GPS £45 - all a total waste of money.

Firstly the unit after installing TOMTOM would see the Bluetooth GPS, but TOMTOM would not register with it. Bought the Compact Flash GPS thinking that not being over airwaves a direct contact would work - NO!

Have Cable Wireless modem in the house - connect on the Internet through Laptop. Despite hours of trying WiFi will not connect even if I sit next to the cable modem - it asks for a phone number to connect - hey this is WiFi why would I need a bloody phone number.

Sitting on a bus in London, Airport in USA and it sees hot-spots, but can I connect to the Internet can I hell!!!

I try to set up a new Bluetooth connection and the idiot thing says that there is not Bluetooth on the machine - despite the flashing blue light. However, I tried pairing and it saw my Partner's phone and I swapped some ringtones with her.

I have tried to follow the printed out WiFI and Bluetooth links on this website to no avail. In fact must have printed them out so many time I have swallowed up 3 trees worth of paper, when I cannot do it I bin em, then try again 3 months later.

If you want an easy life to connect to the Internet DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE LUMPS OF SHIT!!!!

If there is anyone living near Sittingbourne in Kent who has had success in getting one of these things working and would be prepared to try and help me before I drive over it and claim an accident on my insurance then I would welcome the help.

Otherwise please recommend a unit which does what this thing is supposed to do, but could be set up by my cat, then please HELP!!!!!

I was quite annoyed by the phone number thing also. The whole wireless set up is convoluted and takes a lot to get through the first time. I don't know why microsoft didn't make one of those idiot wizards.

Sounds like you've been through a lot, buy hey you got bluetooth to work! That aint easy brother.

Here are some short descriptions on how to get wifi to work. You probably already did them but here goes.

1) Tap the icon on the desktop that looks like a broken power meter.
1a)Then select settings. Select "My network card connects to " Work.
1b) Select Dell Axim Wlan wireless Adapter
1c) tap OK at the top right.

2) Tap Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Connections - Advanced
2a) Under Select which networks are automatically use tap Select Networks
2b) For both boxes select My Work Network
2c) Under the top selection select Edit
2d) Make sure the Modem field is blank and select the proxy settings tab
2e) Make sure The Network connects to the internet it checked
2f) Make sure the The network uses a proxy is NOT Checked. - I find on my system this gets checked sometimes and wifi will no longer work. Once you get it working and then it stops working make sure this is NOT checked.
2g) Press Okay at the top untill all the way out

3) Drive to Wifi Hot spot and turn on wifi. and it should connect. One note it takes a while for the unit to connect and get all set up. try to open a web page to quickly you will get that flight mode/ settings pop up. Just close it and wait a bit and try again. Wait about a minute for the connection. If it does not work go to the settings and check that damn proxy check box.

One last note. The broken power meter means wifi is off. when on the green light will flash. If the power meter is whole but all white that usually means the proxy checkbox is checked.... Really means you are connected but do not have internet access for some reason. Green bars on the power meter and you should be good to go.

Of coarse there can be more to it than this. If you have further problems post again.

Good Luck

There must be a BIG difference between WM5 and WM2003se. Odyssey does a very good job of making connection to WiFi internet easy.
Note that a lot of people who have had trouble getting WiFi to connect in the past have had great success connecting after flashing the newest firmware to their routers.

I am sorry to hear about this.

My x50v works quite well, although I haven't hit to many hot-spots as of yet. At home I have zero issues (wifi or anything else). I also do not have any GPS stuff. I use my x50v for just about everything else.

I never knew what odysse was for. Like Flight Mode I did not find an explanation of what it was for or what to do with it. Looking it over I thought it was for connecting to networks that required some sort of login.....

btw philiphales make sure flight mode is OFF. flight mode just disables wifi.

The Odyssey client does a good job of something but it's not making wifi easy, mainly it just makes it slow bringing the x51 out of standby.

Thanks for the help - I shoulda posted this in X50V, still we give it a try when I get home tonight.

Trouble with all manufacturers - they are the testers, they should walk out into the street, grab some guy and say "I have just made this - see if you can get it to work!!"

I bet Gates doesn't have the same problems.

I think there's one of the differences b/t WM2003se (my machine is an '03) and WM5. WiFi slows me down out of standby, but Odyssey just sitting there doesn't, and in concert with WiFi isn't any slower from standby than WiFi alone.
