Aximsitesoftwareicon Lost HALF the space on my SD Card! HELP!!!

Here's my scenario:

I have a 2GB Sandisk SD card that I normally use to hold movies & mp3s on my X50v.

I was recently in Japan and bought a JUNK digital camera (made by AVOX). Anyway, I put the 2GB SD into the camera, and it took a loooong time for the camera to respond. Kinda like when TaskMan is PEGGED in Windows, and mouseclick responses are slow. It was that same symptom.

So, thinking it was a camera issue, I turned off the camera and pulled the SD card out.

When I put it back into my X50v, I noticed that there was NO DATA on the card.

Here's the WEIRD part: Now the 2GB card only has 967MB of available space!

So, I proceeded to load up the card on my desktop through a card reader. Under START|Programs|Administrative Tools|Computer Management|Disk Management I can see the SD Card as normal, BUT it shows there are TWO PARTITIONS!!!

1. 969MB FAT32 Healthy (Active) [Blue]
2. 968MB Unallocated [Black]

To Boot: Windows (XP Pro SP2) sees the entire volume, but won't allow me to 'Delete Partition'. It's Grayed-Out in the Right-Click Menu...

I checked Sandisk's website, and they have a solution using FDISK command for Win98 users.

Has anyone experienced this or found a solution using WinXP?

Thanks! [ARGGHHHH]

PS: I tried reformatting using FAT16, then FAT32 with no change...

Looks like the camera has a limit, so it repartitioned then reformatted your card.
Googled "winxp partition" and got lots of hit like this one:
http://www.webtechgeek.com/How-to-Pa...Windows-XP.htm

So you should be able to recover your SD card.

Use a tool like PartitionMagic and try to merge those two partitions together. There maybe other freeware tools as well.

This is a strange problem, the camera tossing out half the space to make is usable.

uzziah, yes, it looks like the camera has a hardcoded limit on the size of the storage card.

I'm familiar with partitioning HDs in general because I usually reformat my desktop and laptop PCs on average about every 6 months. Unfortunately, in this case, WinXP won't allow me to reformat the entire volume, just the first half. So, thanks for the advice anyway, and I'll keep googling too.

Chewy, thanks for the advice. I checked out PartitionMagic, and it looks like it's $69.95 retail, so I might be better off just buying another 2GB card for <$50

JK, I'm still hunting for a solution!

You can't delete the partition and start all over?

I have partition magic, so if you send me the card I modify the existing partition!

Otherwise, here are 2 links, the first I think will allow you to delete the partition, if not, the second has some free partitioning tools:

That's right, I CANNOT delete the partition and start all over. The 'Delete Partition' option is Grayed-Out of the Right-Click menu. Which is why I'm so frustrated right now!

Thanks for the offer to send you the card. If I get desperate enough, I'll PM you and get the shipping info. What's your fee? :)

OK, I'll check out the links in a bit, thanks (I'm trying to see if DISKPART will let me do any of this)!

mrp, I'm in DISKPART now looking at some of the commands. I'd like to try the CLEAN command, but I'm having some syntax issues. Can you tell me if I need to use some switches?

Specifically, I'm having problems identifying which drive needs to be cleaned.

Running diskpart.exe brings up the DISKPART> prompt

From there, I've tried:

DISKPART> CLEAN
which returns: There is no disk selected. Please select a disk and try again.

So, I tried:

DISKPART> CLEAN L:\
which returns: The arguments you specified for this command line are not valid.

The same for:
DISKPART> CLEAN L:
DISKPART> L: CLEAN

Can you tell me how I can select my L: drive to be cleaned? I can't seem to find a list of switches, if that's what it takes. Anyway, it looks like CLEAN is the most appropriate action in DISKPART. What do you think? Thanks!

There is a program called Flash Format for the PPC @ 14.95 that will allow you to maintain your cards, format, verify, set autorun, verify/repair etc, but it DOES NOT have a partition management tool in it. I've this little program quite useful in dealing my various cards. From Cnetx.com

mrp, after doing some diggin, I found a description of the commands at MS's website.

So, yet ANOTHER hurdle:

DISKPART> list disk
shows:

Disk 0 Online (Internal HD)
Disk 1 Online (Internal HD)
Disk 6 Online (External HD)

So, the SD Card doesn't show up as a Disk. It does, however show up as a Volume when I use the List Volume command.

The rub is: the CLEAN command apparently only works on DISKS seen by DISKPART. It won't work for VOLUMES. ARGH!

So, if I try a command like: clean volume 7, it returns an error saying the arguments I supplied for this command aren't valid.

So, I'll keep on pluggin' away at it. Thanks for the info on this. I'm sure I'll be able to use this in the future (it's much more capable/dangerous than Disk Management function in Admin Tools).

no need to buy Partition Magic, you can use Windows XP disc manager (from your caps program )

1. Backup, fire in the hole
2. Delete both partition
3. Recreate/ re-partitioning
4. Allocate the maximum size, recommended to select FAT16 & reformat
5. Test & error

encore, that's the problem is that Disk Mgr in WinXP won't allow me to DELETE the partitions (plz see prev posts), that option is GRAYED OUT!!!

sorted in my case - Fujitsu-Siemens LOOX 560 + 4gb card

Hi,

Just sorted simmilar issue.
Have lost 3 GB form 4GB card by using it in HP laptop reader.

Solution:
download StorageTools Format/ Scan/ Defragment 2.0
from http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=3191 (trial version will do)
Install it on Pocket PC
Insert your SD card and go to format
(in my case it looks like software deleted 1GB partition and replaced it with 4GB)

good luck
