Ok, thanks for all the advice. What I've done is dismantled it back to the motherboard, removed the battery and the speaker. Dunked it in distilled water and soaked it, dryed it and then used a can of compressed air all over. Trying to re-assemble but the small black comb that secures one of the main ribbons to the screen is frustrating me, any ideas on how this goes back in?

There are two flex connectors. I have attached two images of the connectors open and closed.
The one for the LCD is a bit tricky. BUT - first you have to open the connector. To open the connector, get your fingernail under the front edge at each end of the small black clamp (see the attached pictures) and slowly open it back. It is on a very small hinge. Once it's open, you can slide the flex cable under it.
You need to mount the LCD against the front of the PCB first then very carefully bend the flex cable to the back of the PCB and fit the leading edge into the connector. The flex may have to be raised up at an angle to fit it into the connector. Do not get any skin oil on the contacts as this can cause corrosion, leading to other issues down the raod.
Make sure the cable is seated straight. There should be two very small indents on either edge of the flex that will fit over small tabs on the connector to align it. Once the flex is inserted, close the clamp and make sure that it snaps down at either end.
Do NOT pull on the flex to test it as you can damage this connector by doing that.
Next, open the connector for the digitizer. Pull open very slowly until it stops. Slide the digitizer flex into the connector and close the clamp. The digitizer flex is slightly long and needs to be folded between the LCD and the PCB.
When inserting the assembly back into the case, make sure that nothing is under any stress around the front of the display. You should not have to force the case closed and it should snap together very easily.
All done.
