A desperate plea for help with synch

Hello - I know there have been many posts on problems getting Axim to synch. I have read all those I can find, and nothing yet has worked for more than a single synch. I am now at the point where the computer won't see the axim at all. I was torn between throwing this little computer at by big computer or trying another post. I thought the post to the forum would be a good first step.

Background. A year or so, all things were sunny and rosy on the axim front. I could sink to my office computer no problem. I then switch to my home computer as my main place of work, and so moved the axim to this one. I quickly got frustrated thta I coudn't synch to both, but then gave up trying and just synched to this one. That was fine for a while.

Then ... all hell broke loose. I do not recall what precipitated it, but it may have been me trying to upgrade from 3.8 to 4.0 or when i was trying to get the dell to be seen by multiple computers.

Here is where i am at:

My home computer is running XP. It does not 'see' my dell (USB connection) ... not even registering it as a guest.

I have, turned off firewalls; diabled virus protection; unistalled activesynch; installed 3.8; 4.0; 4.2 (even bought wm5, but can't install it becaue the computer can see the axim); soft resets; hard reset. Nothing is working. I have tried to delete some of the regedit lines thta others have posted, but most of them (all of those that say CE_device) don't seem to be listed.

One thing that does seem funny is that when i install activesynch and it says to plug in and turn on the axim, my computer pops up the little box saying my computer recognizes the axim and its ready for use ... this seems to be part of windows plug-and-play thing, rather than through activesync. I wonder whether this part of XP is 'beating' activesync in recognizing the device? Or I am completely out to lunch.

I welcome any and all comments here. This has been the most frustrating issue I have ever had with a computer. Its fair to say the time I have spent having to deal with this is likley on par to the amount of time saved during the year of having an operational pda. The old paper and pencil approach to organization is looking better.

thank you for you time and comments.

Does your usb port recognize and work with other peripherals -- such as card readers or flash drives?

I have an XP laptop that I used to sync with and it too doesn't work. It recognizes the ax briefly and then says it has a problem. I thought it was AS, but now the USB ports don't recognize any other peripheral other than a mouse.

I've just figured out it's hosed and haven't looked back over the posts to figure this out, but it is definitely broken and I think AS had something to do with breaking it.

I'm thinking I have to get USB working again before I can solve the AS problem. justa thought.

thanks for the idea, but yes, the usb port does still work. As for your problem, i did read in a page, somewhere, that the cradle can burn out a usb hub under some circumstances.

sorry.

You did not mention this but if your using a USB hub, that could be a problem, install to USB by itself if you are. Make sure your USB ports are working, but I believe it is because your computer sees the Axim when you connect. Try uninstalling and reinstalling Active sync. Maybe you can restore back to a previous time before when Active Sync worked. Check in device manager for conflicts.

fixed! thank you

Thank you for this response. I at first dismissed it because I 'knew' i was plugging into a usb port, not hub. But then I realized that I was plugging into an added bank of usb/sd/sc readers/ports ... in other words, i forgot that in my computer i had a hub for all sorts of plugin devices.

When i instead plug directly into the usb ports elsewhere on the machine, it works. Hopefully this one will last!

thank you very much for these comments ... i knew it couldn't be software related, as i have already done those 'fixes'.

cheers,

jc
