I am a long time PDA user and I try to keep my devices working well.
I just got a x51v and am preparing for what will break on it first. I have scouted around and found all the common software issues but only some hard ware problems appear to be recurring. I know that the feet come off. I will reinforce those with better glue. What else has tended to break (other than the screen)? How has the sync connector held up? The headphone jack?
I have a nice aluminum case on order and I always use screen protection. Any other tips for keeping the thing in working order?
Mine has been pretty bullet proof for a year now but there have been a few threads dealing with headphone jack problems. Apparently the switching contacts can be a bit lazy and not switch the internal speaker back on when the plug is removed.
Early on there were a few problems with the battery cover latching (error message) but I haven't seen anything on that lately.
I use mine daily, it gets bounced around in the truck in the Target $7.00 ipod holder , which has never failed to hold even on some very hard bumps:rolling: , (3/4 ton 4x4) while running the gps and pullling up customer info.
Very durable unit, i'm happy with it, no-more laptop to carry around.:approve:
What will break first? Not sure what it wuz. Just locked up. Dell replaced. Kept wanting to scroll left. Dell replaced. 3rd time a charm? Still like it and recommend them to anyone. Just sold another person on one this week.
Great, thanks for the input. I have been an Axim x30 High user over the past couple years and have had several little things fall off of it like the rubber feet, the sync connector support, the head phone problem (they should have fixed this by now, long time problem for Dell, x3, x30, x50, now x51 all with the same issue). Also the tip of the sylus broke while opening up the batery door (I am more careful with the stylus now). I use my PDA like my laptop. I leave the laptop at the office. The PDA/TO BT Keyboard is my primary divice for writing reports in the field. Looking forward to VGA and more memory/utility options as well as the VGA out for presentations.
just get the dell 3 year extended warranty i got it with my x50v and am on my 3rd one........oh ya stuff that breaks would be the screen (get a magnesium case, screen protectors), the headphone jack (dunno about that), D pad (dunno either) and the SD and CF slots(be careful when inserting cards and keep the plastic things on when not in use)
Have had my axim x50 since 2004. just recently I've had problems with the connection between the axim and the cradle. I have to wiggle it around in the cradle before it connects.
For several months now my 2yo x50v has given me trouble. Cleaning the connector and cradle initially helped, but now it is very tough to charge/synch. I have a second cradle at work that behaves similarly.
I've not found a good fix for this except an expensive repair.
The rubber feet are the biggie and the only thing that has died on my axim. The hold button feels different. At first it was very easy to slide, and now it has far more friction, though not "broken." My guess would be that dirt got in under it. I don't use screen protectors because I don't like the changed feel, look, and the bubbles, but my screen has held up great nonetheless. Just dont use a scalpel for a stylus. ;)
