My x50v had been acting funny lately, PIE was running super slow for some reason and then one day it just froze while running. After that, soft resets just hung on the 'Dell' boot screen.
So, since I had everything backed up, I figured I'd just hard reset, since I've only had to do that ONCE in the two years I've owned by axim, I didn't think it was a big deal.
While re-installing software, I installed Adobe Acrobat reader onto Built In Storage. I didn't see it in the 'Programs' menu, so I figured I'd soft reset. After that, WM2003 SE could no longer see the Built-In Storage. I put it in the cradle and tried to 'explore' to it - no luck. I tried another soft reset - still gone. Finally I tried a hard reset - and it is still gone.
Any suggestions about what to do? I THOUGHT I had a warranty on this, but I can't find it anywhere in my papers. Since it's been more than 2 years, I can't find any record of me buying this from dell either. Should I call them and ask them to fix it, even if it is not under warranty? Is it possible to live without BIS since I have a SD card and a CF card?
I'm guessing your running WM2003se. I'd try another hard reset before trying to go to Dell, which unless you have an extended warranty, might prove useless.
I'm now attempting to use the axim without BIS (installing most stuff to SD card). Haven't had any problems with it yet.
Look and see if there is a file/directory named Built-in Storage. I had mine disappear a year or so ago and found that file in main memory. Once I deleted it, the regular BIS showed back up. I can't remember the details, I may have had to start in safe mode (SPB Pocket Plus, or iLauncher has that functionality) to be able to delete it. I also seem to remember it took another hard reset to get it back. Hope this helps!

I looked all around and can not see any file of this type.
Well, this is my last chance at getting some help. My guess is that the BIS is corrupt and needs to be reformatted or something. Is there any way I can do this?
Failing that, does anyone think it would be worth calling Dell about this? Is there something they can do? Will they help me out even though my warranty has expired for more than a year now?
Don't waste your time talking to Dell, all they'll want to do is sell you a new Axim. Search the forums for companies that do repairs and see what other's have to say about them. Here are 2 to consider:

Thanks again for any help.
You might want to try upgrading the OS to WM5, as this totally reconfigures and reformats the BIS into a block of system memory. Plus with the A02 update just released it seems very stable and usable.

Ah, yeah I was thinking about doing that since I've had my unused wm5 upgrade discs for over a year now. Now that I know the upgrade reformats the BIS, I think I'll actually go through with the upgrade. Thanks.
Good news. I installed WM5 and also the new Dell A02 updgrade, and I got my Built-In Storage back. I'm a little confused about how wm5 handles BIS vs ROM vs Memory and all, but I have a 90MB block of space I can install stuff to (alongside my CF and SD cards), a snazzy new OS and everything seems to be in tip-top shape!

Glad to hear that the memory is back. You'll also want to apply the Fake Server Hack to keep Activesync from restarting every 5-10 minutes. So far with this hack in place I haven't had any trouble with the A02 upgrade.
