My X50V is about 18 months old. Most of the time it just resides in the cradle connected to power. Occasionaly I may take it with me on appointments but only for a couple of hours. Lately, even in the cradle, it just seems to freeze and I have to reset it. If I take it with me, within 1/2 hour, the battery seems dead?!
I used an IPAQ for years, and never had problems, even the battery was going strong after 4 years?!
I find it hard to believe it's the battery - but, if it is, is it worth replacing it? if it isn't what could it be?
Secondly what about this WM5 update - how do you tell which of the updates do I use - what is the difference between the QVGA LE and the QVGA ME?
as for the first question, I'd be tempted to say try a hard reset (I sound like Dell tech support)... that might take care of the freezing. as for the battery life, since you never take it out of the cradle, I can almost guarantee it's lost its zero point. you have to condition your battery to really make it last, just like a laptop battery. what you need to do is back up all your data just in case, disable all power management (set it to not turn off if idle for any amount of time) and then just let it sit. let it go completely dead until it turns off. if you're running WM5, you lose nothing, if 2003se, you lose everything and hence why I recommended the backup :) once it's completely dead, put it back in the cradle and charge it all the way back up. rinse and repeat... after letting it go completely dead and recharging it a few times, you should (but won't necessarily) have a better battery life. if not... well... you might have a bad battery or worse... anyone who knows more about this than me, please feel free to add to or correct as necessary
personally, I'd say that if it is indeed the battery, you should be able to find a replacement fairly affordable on ebay (~$15-20 shipped? that's what I'm seeing now).
as for the update rom, first make sure you're running WM5 and not 2003se
since you have an X50v, you have a *VGA* screen and not a QVGA. DO NOT USE EITHER OF THE ROMS YOU LISTED. the LE is for the low-end model, with the slow processor and smaller resolution screen. the ME is the same, but with a faster processor and wifi. the VGA rom is the one you want.
I repeat, the VGA rom is the one you want. there is only one VGA rom, as long as you're downloading the right language.

Just a quick update - I drained battery fully (disabling power management), then charged 100% and repeated this cycle twice more. After the 3rd full charge (green light appeared), when I took the x50v from the cradle, the screen went all white - I had to do a soft reset! After the reset all is well. Is this because I let the battery die and only then placed it in the cradle, so when I removed the axim from the cradle, it turned on, but there's nothing there! By the way I am running WM% so all my data is OK after the soft reset.
Just wondering why it's doing this?!

ok, there's a couple of possibilities to this one. it's possible a ram error occurred or something to that effect... but what seems more likely is what a lot of other threads hint to... the white screen is possibly an error with activesync. I've had the whitescreen before in the same way... leaving it in the cradly overnight and having it whitescreened in the morning. my guess is that it's related to software in some way (maybe activesync? heard it might cause whitescreens)... as long as a soft reset takes care of it, there's not too much to worry about... but yeah.
confirm: yes, it is indeed VGA and not QVGA.
so how's your battery life now? did that do anything for it? I resurrected a 1997 laptop battery to an hour through that, was less than 10 minutes before...
thanks for the quick reply - testing the battery life now, will let you know - so far it has been over an hour OK!:)
