I installed WM5 A02 and rolled back to WM2003SE after a couple of weeks. If you ask me, it does kind of say something that one must go through a dozen tips and tricks to hope to attain performance on par with WM2003SE. However, that is not what I judge it on.
I found some programs to be slower or less responsive. I quite literally measured the battery drain playing vids, doing nothing, and running another program, and it was not only worse, but much worse. I followed ALL the tips on the recommended tips pages, and rechecked. The fake server hack, etc.
I am certain there are programs that must run faster with WM5, but whatever they are, I am not a user, so for my uses WM5 has proven to be measurably worse. I'm back to WM2003SE and am a happy camper once again. Just my 2 cents of course.

I have one X50v with PPC2003SE and one X50v with WM5 A02. I haven't run them side-by-side to test the speed, but after all this "discussion" back and forth, maybe I'll give it a try soon.

Take a video and post it on youtube. To make all things equal, make a backup, do a hard reset and take a video of both devices being used side by side. That way no one can say that one is slower because of incompatible software. And that way people can see for themselves which is really faster.
Ok Next week is spring break where I teach so I am going to take the leap and upgrade.
Where is the best list of steps to go through? I have an X50V, most of my stuff is on my SD and CF cards. I do know my pocket e-sword has an uprade for wm05 but where can I found out what else I have is compatible?
Absolutely terrible, I would actually go ahead and say WARNING do not upgrade...here is why
I have tried twice now with A02 WM5 and have done all the recommended tweaks as suggested on this site, Registry/Tweak2/SKtools...
initially things are ok, you think its all running at a similar speed to 2003, until you begin to install software, I actually had a major problem installing the latest version of Wisbar advanced 2, the device was trying to boot up with this in start up and it would hang terribly, I had to try and quickly open an explorer and remove WB from the start up menu, Pocketbreeze ran very slowly, when you change from tab to tab on 2003 its instant, with the sound click instant as it should...on A02 WM5, it actually was over a second sometimes even more, this might not sound too bad to you, but you put together all the slight delays as you flip around trying to make notes, appointments and the like, the device soon becomes terribly frustrating...
I have now reverted back to 2003 and thank god I did so, now everything is so fast and responsive I can use my PDA as an organiser again instead of a paper weight ...
My advise to anyone is stay with 2003...
I wanted so much for WM5 to work, I even gave it a good old go, I followed the tweaks to the letter and did everything to apparently make WM5 run perfectly...
But I just don't think the x50v is ment for this upgrade.
I read the reviews I read the advise not to upgrade but I did it anyway as anyone else would too, but please try it out and meet us back in 2003 land soon...:exc:

NOTHING was ever instant for me in 2003. And I was also having to reset 2-4 times a day due to the crappy driver memory model Microsoft used. Now with WM5 I'm writing this in Opera with Calligrapher, with Pocketbreeze on the today screen and Wisbar advanced skinning the today screen. The only thing I'm unhappy with is those stupid softkeys at the bottom of the screen that duplicate button operations. I used the NEW menu in 2003 all the time, and now it's gone.
WM5 is running perfectly on my machine, and I'm not going to wet my pants just because I don't have 30mb free memory. I never had that in 2003, either. Run along, fanboys.
As you can see it lists that it comes with WM5. Having read some of the problems that people are having with WM5 I am now a bit concerned. What is the best way to test how well it is running? Also, if I decide that I want WM3, how do I get it on the machine? Any help would be much appreciated.
I do not intend on trash talking an OS that someone likes. I personally think if you like it you should keep it. However I wanted people to know my experience with Mobile 5 on my x50v.
First of all the upgrade has been done on my system and rolled back several times because of the same issues. I know what I am doing and the upgrade was done correctly.
The system does have some refresh issues with mobile 5. Mobile 5 can be made to run some what decent. The biggest issue I have had is compatiblility. Most of my old software either slows the system down or does not run at all. If you really want to see how the unit will run with mobile 5 on it, try to only run programs that say mobile 5 compatible for a while. As soon as you put programs that were not designed for mobile 5 on the unit it will run like junk!
I must say that mobile 5 is still much slower than 2003SE. That is not opinion, it is fact. The people that designed the unit would tell you the thing was not designed to run mobile 5. The biggest issue you will notice is when you click on programs it will take several seconds to show the icons. If yours doesn't do that then please left me know how you did it since I do like mobile 5. That issue is often intermitent. Sometimes the icons come up slow and sometimes they don't.
I am going back to 2003SE again. If you like mobile 5 however, it does not cripple it too bad. After all it is your own personnal choice.
I hope I have helped someone, and if anyone else has any tweeks that will help the refresh issues on Mobile 5 please share them with me.
