dropped x50v, most buttons no longer working, advice needed
Guys,
The title says it all. A couple of days ago, on my way home, I dropped my x50v on the train, and it fell face down on the hard floor. The screen still works great, but of all of the buttons on the front of the device (4 application buttons, d-pad), only the calender button still works.
I'm somewhat bummed about what happened, but I need to find out what my options going forward.
Does someone know the internals of the x50v well enough to tell me how easy/difficult, possible/impossible it would be to fix the buttons, either by opening the unit myself or sending it in to technicians somewhere?
If I end up having to replace my device, what would be a good alternative? I don't want to spend tons of money, but I think I need a PDA.
What do you all think?
Phillip

I am not sure how much or easy it would be to get the buttons repaired.
I dropped my axim, and had all of the buttons on the front faceplate malfunction. My calendar button does not work. I have been using it in this crippled state for over a year.
There are alternate ways to hard reset your axim without the use of any of the buttons on the front face.
A good replacement would be an ipaq hx4700 for about $200 off of ebay or a low end pda off of craigslist.

Hi FunkyCowie,
There are multiple ways to hard reset the axim without the use of certain buttons.
1) Take the main battery out of the axim, and allow the back up battery to drain fully causing a hard reset.
Caution: Option 2 ventures into territory that many may find too risky.
2) While holding down the wireless and power button, use a stylus to push the reset button. Next, fully take out the main battery and put it back in after waiting one second.
Congratulations, the axim has now been hard reset.
Legal Disclaimer: Attempt at one's own risk. Any unintended consequences are the result of one's own action(s).
Thank you.

Solved my problem, PHM Task manager has the function to initiate and complete a full hard reset with out the need to do any tricky business with pressing hardware buttons :)

Hi FunkyCowie,
Glad to hear that the problem has been solved.
After reading through the instruction set I left, I noticed that it is lacking, and needs more clarification.

Not sure how WM5 works. This may or may not work for WM5.
Here goes try number 2 for how to reset a WM2003SE Dell Axim x50v.
Minimal Requirements:
A) Actively working Power Button
B) Actively working Wireless Button (Located on the left side of the axim above the record button)
1)Remove any SD card and external power supply (wall charger, usb charger, car charger, etc.) located on the Dell Axim x50v.
2) Press and hold down the Power Button and Wireless Button together with one hand.
3) Continue to hold down the two aforementioned buttons, and use a stylus to fully depress the reset button (as one may do for a soft reset) for half a second. The reset button is located on the backside of the x50v.
4) Eventually, the SD Image Update A01 screen will pop up. Let go of the two buttons. Now, take out the main battery, leave the battery out for one second, and reinsert the battery.
5) Power the x50v back on.
Congratulations, the x50v has now been hard reset.
As can be seen, lots of clarification was and still probably is needed. Hopefully, I too can upgrade to WM5 or 6 one day.
