First, welcome to Aximsite. You'll find a wealth of info here. Especially if you use the search function.
Your question has been a hot topic recently. Yes, you can upgrade to WM2005 and I don't believe you can go back if there's a problem. You have the same unit I do. My suggestion, stay with WM2003 for now.

Actually, you can revert back to WM2003 if you don't like WM5 but most people have found the X50 series not to work well with WM5.
Here's the downgrade link just in case you try the upgrade:
I've upgraded 3 units and everyone loves the new OS. Not perfect, but as good or better than 2003 in every way. The key is to make sure that you follow directions when upgrading, and install software that is compatible with WM5. The only hack I applied is the fake server hack, and I make sure that I close Activesync when finished. Otherwise, it's more stable than it was on 2003. Not everyone has problems with the upgrade as others would lead you to believe, but you can roll back if necessary. What I like is that my X50V will be viable with the OS for a few more years than if I stayed with 2003.

I don't think that's going to be the case. For one thing WM5 is probably one of, if not the shortest lived operating systems around. Secondly, there are more 2003 ppc devices than there are 2005 pocket pc devices. Thirdly, I believe that software companies are likely to concentrate on making software for devices which are more predominant in the consumer market and pocket pc's popularity is on a decline. Software companies are not going to make a product exclusively for WM2005 for pocket pcs. Take a look around, majority of "Major" software makers updating their products still support 2003 and will probably support 2003 since the code is already there, all they have to do is update it. It's going to stay that way until they decide not to support pocket pc devices altogether.
