Hi everyone,
I had so much trouble sorting this problem out, that I <swore an oath

> if I ever fixed it I would post my solution to help others with similar problems.
Please forgive if I dont give enough detail here , this is my second posting attempt, the first was wiped due to a login timeout. So I plan to come back later and flesh it out though !
Background :
---------------
Ages ago I was given an entry level dell axim x50, with no WiFi built in. I tried bluetooth but wasn't completely happy. So I bought a Compact Flash Wireless card from an online auction site. While it (the Wireless LAN card) worked fine there was a big problem.
The Problem :
----------------
When the wifi card was inserted and i powered the axim off, i couldn't then turn it back on. I had to <painfully> time and time again remove the battery whereby I got the error "Memory error detected please press (contacts) buttton" Then the axim reset itself and I could start again. This problem got worse........ the wifi card drained the battery while in the apparent OFF state. Basically, it was a lose lose situation :(
The axim was normal once the wifi card was removed. Since i'm a computer enthusiast, I worked on a solution. It took ages. I researched this site and other net resources, and here is my own solution.
The Solution :
----------------
Who was to blame? The wifi card? the axim? Neither really...... Just an incompatibilty somewhere I guess.
This solution is a workaround, which I am perfectly happy with.
Firstly, I put the WiFi card in flight mode and its light went off. Good !! Then I'll try deleting its driver file . I happen to know it which .dll file it used . When i tried that an error came up "you cant delete this file, there is a sharing violation".
Cool just like windows OS.
Then I tried renaming the driver file and..........................it was renamed....
Now I dont think you can do that with windows xp but i could be wrong.
Then I did a soft reset and there were no error messages, and best of all the wirless card didn't work.
Having done that I used a godsend (namely mortscript) to write two batch files (or scripts). I will post them later, but in essence;
WirelessOFF -
this script renames the driver (.dll file) to another name then performs a soft reset. The axim restarts, and the wirless card doesn't work - no driver. But I can use the axim as normal, and power it off and on. Before running the script I go into flight mode.
WirelessON -
this script renames the driver (.dll file) back to what its supposed to be called then performs a soft reset. Now the wireles card fires up...... cool.
Moral of the story
----------------------
well I cant think of one
Happy axim-ing all !
cheers.........................
