>> Axim X50v Bricked. Suggestions? <<

Hey ya'll,

I was attempting to update my X50v to Windows Mobile 6 from Windows 2003. My understanding was that I needed to update the boot loader first using an SD card, and then the updated WM5 boot loader could load the latest version of WM5 and from there I could load WM6.

I updated the boot loader and everything seemed to work successfully. At the end of the SD boot loader process I was prompted to perform a hard reset and upon doing so, my Axim X50v powered off and will not power on. Nothing! Nada!

It's almost like the power button was disabled. So, at this point, though I'm willing to pay Dell their $159 repair charge to have them re-flash the ROM for me, I'd rather find a third party company that is willing to do it cheaper, or even better, where to find the tools and means to flash the ROM myself (hard flash, not with software, but a bit writer of some sort).

Obviously, I'm hoping for the help of someone with professional knowledge of ROM programming. If you can help, I'd appreciate it, otherwise, please avoid lengthening this thread with snide remarks. I'm asking for a little maturity if that's not too much to ask. Having said that, I do appreciate any advice that anyone may have that may help.

Thanks,
Bret

you were suppose to have WM5 loaded already with the latest rom then upgrade to WM6 it would of been better if they made it where you can update from activesync

Hi,

I know this will not help but I think Kenneth11414 is right.

You needed to upgrade to WM5 then to WM6 or the bootloader is not the right one.

Be a good thing to go to XDA Developers to get more info on this.

It is my understanding the discussion is not wanted here by the staff.

I was actually had updated the "boot loader ONLY" from WM2003 to WM5 (hadn't even gotten to WM6 yet, being aware that I had to update to WM5 first).

I ran the procedure for updating the boot loader to WM5 boot loader so that I could use it to update the ROM to WM5, A01. Then had planned to update to WM5, A02 and finally WM6.

Everything to have gone successfully with the boot loader update. It had finished it's little routine and was waiting on input from me.... "perform a hard reset".

Once I performed a hard reset the device normally powers off for a moment and then powers back on, but it never came back on.

I'm thinking the boot loaders is hosed, so I don't want to pay some company $100 saying they can fix it only to have them take my money and return the Axim to me saying, "well, if the boot loader was working, we could fix it".

Anyone have any suggestions? I know if I send it back to Dell, they can use a 'bit writer' type tool to rewrite the boot loader and reload the ROM. The memory in these things (though not made to be written to "often") is NOT READ ONLY. They "can" be fixed. I'm just hoping to avoid paying a bunch of money to end up where I started.

The device "is" 3 years old and I only used it about once a month or so (have a WM6 PDA phone that I use much more now), so I decided if I updated it, I might use it more often (having the latest greatest and all).

I'll probably just stick with the PDA phone, but would love to be able to resurrect this thing if I can do it for $100 or less. It is a great device (just not so much when you have a 'better' one that is a phone and has 3G internet access too) :)

If you messed up your pocket pc while trying to update your pocket pc to an illegal ROM, I doubt you'll get much help from Dell.

I'd suggest you seek help out of your predicament from the person who cooked this ROM. As previously stated by another poster to this thread, this forum does not foster discussion about illegal ROMs.

I don't know if this was mentioned or not but I would contact PocketPCTechs.com. I think they have a ROM restoral option. Their diagnostic charge is $60 and if they find your unit is unrepairable it is just $35. I have used their service and found them to be extremely professional and competent. If all else fails.......

Can you not load the bootloader?

Hi,

Proably a silly question but have you tried to load into the bootloader screen after flashing the WM5 loader?

If you can get to the bootloader, you will be able to flash WM5 or WM6...
