constant orange light but no boot, why?

An idiotic friend of mine tried to update his x50 to a WM6 ROM and crapped it.
I took a look at it and manged to get it to the SD boot loader. I used an image he had which came up as the WM2003 A05, it went through the loading of it an flashing.
It then said it was complete and to do a hard reset by pressing the POWER and RESET button. Since I first pressed this combo, all I get is the power led in AMBER and nothing else. The bootloader sequence of Wifi+Power+Reset does not work. I even tried another guys idea of pressing the RESET multiple times while pressing the other two, but I get nothing.
Does the constant amber/orange mean something?
We had to plug the mains into the cradle to get the x50 to stay on while we did the ROM update, so could the battery be shot?

Try this to rule out the battery.
Open the battery cover and remove the battery. Replace the cover and connect the axim to the mains power through either the cradle or ps and adapter. Try powering on the axim. A functioning axim will work this way without a battery

I tried the "take out the battery and leave the case one" but then I get no orange light at all and the unit still does nont power on. When I stick the battery back in, the light goes orange again, but nothing else happens.
Is it a gonner?
