x50v keeps clearing memory and having memory errors

The last few weeks or so, I've basically stopped using my Axim x50v because I can't get it running correctly. There's about a 90% chance every time I turn the machine back on that the axim either shows a memory error requiring a clear, or it takes its own initiative and just starts out already asking for the first-time-on calibrations with everything already wiped out. My axim is on rom update a05, and I don't know whether or not to bother attempting a reload or whether I'm gonna risk bricking it if I don't troubleshoot the problem first. Any ideas?

It sounds like the battery is losing charge for some reason. If that happens you will get the memory error and if it went far enough it will deplete the backup battery as well. A few hints: make sure that you turn off wifi before you turn it off; keep it on a AC charge when you are not using it will help too. If you are trying to charge if from the USB port you will have to make sure that ActiveSync is not trying to turn it on to sync. Usually what happens is that it turns on every night at midnight to do its normal daily rituals (this is normal for all of the axmis) and if it isn't charging and the wifi was left on it won't turn itself off when it is done. If you are not able to put it on the charger when you are not using it then be extra sure to turn off wifi because also if something on your Today page is trying to update, it will turn on about every 5 minutes trying to do that and also kill the battery. Another possiblity is that your battery is getting weak from normal wear and tear and won't hold a charge long enough. Keeping it on the AC charger is a good idea with the type of battery in the Ax and will ensure it's long life. good luck!

I leave wifi off at all times, and I leave the usb cable unplugged when I sync it in the cradle nowadays since I haven't had time to configure activesync on my new computer. I bet there is some kind of problem with the battery since it has been a year or so since I replaced it, but the odd thing is that when the axim is on and working correctly, it'll last about as long as it's supposed to on a charge. When I turn it off, though, there's a huge chance that there will be a memory error or other critical failure. Right now i'm charging the axim on the cradle and I'm going to try periodically turning it off and on to see if the problem persists on AC power. If it does then I don't know what I'll do.

I suspect that you will find that if the battery lasts as long as you think it should then something is causing it to turn on (midnight is a big suspicion) and then not turn off. Possibly something trying to get an update on your Today page like a weather program or an RSS feed?
