failed rom upgrade
several months ago i tried to upgrade my x50 from wm2003se to wm5 for a variety of reasons. it was a failure. first i tried to upgrade from a bootleg of the wm5 dell upgrade that i got from a bittorent site, but the x50 got bricked. at that point, i think, but can't be sure, that i had the wm5 bootloader and no rom image. at that point i came to this forum and found out about the sd loader trick. i was never able to get it to work. it always said image not found or some similar error msg. then, i tried to boot into diagnostic mode. i was able to boot to diagnostic mode once but after that have not been able to boot at all.
i tried to follow the upgrade tutorial but am not familiar enough with the process to do it correctly and also was not able to find the ROM at rapidshare.de.
so, my questions are:
(1) i had been trying to load from a 2G sd card, rather than a cf. is that ok or should i reformat my cf card and start from there?
(2) since i'm not sure what's installed vis-a-vis bootloaders and rom image, is there a way that i can find out what my current state of disarray is? or an approach i should follow to figure that out
(3) once i figure that out, where can i get the appropriate bootloaders, rom images and checksum files?
(4) when i tried to hit power/record/reset before i got to the diagnostic mode, sometimes my unit would boot and sometimes not. is there a magic order or technique?
since the diagnostic indicated that my unit was functioning at a hardware level, i can't believe that i'm really bricked. suggestions?
