Hope this is in the right place, didn't see a software problem page.
I have a Dell Axim X50, recently updated it to WM5 which Had ROM A00 and quickly checked the wireless worked...which it did with no problem (wireless also worked flawlessly with WM2003 A05)
However.... I decided to update to the latest version and so on the dell website found version A02 (of which there are two versions ME and LE, I got the ME as my axim has bluetooth and wireless and the 520mhz processor)
Now... it will connect to my router (netgear DG834g) and accept the password etc, but will only stay connected for about 5 seconds maybe less... it DOES work however as i can load the BBC news website if i'm lucky and the connection holds for a few seconds.
Just to clarify, i've tried being close /far from the router (signal is excellent) and I've changed the router channel to one far away from the myriad of other networks near me... but to no avail. I've also tried re-installing version A02 incase it was corrupt.
Anyway Sorry for the wrong post and I hope it's in the right place and someone can help me.... you guys seem to give sound advice!
the only thing I can think of is the powersaving mode on wifi

yeah i've tried that... I thought it might be that , it's so odd and frustrating, it acutually authenticates WPA connects, gets a gateway for a few seconds, and will start to download something and then it says no signal and will scan the networks available... it'll find mine again and connect and authenticate ............ you get the picture!
I have exactly the same problem, so your not on your own. Laptop can get a strong signal is exactly the same place as my axim and keep it, but the axim loses it every few seconds.
Just a thought, it could be that you have the router set to G only, technically the ax shouldn't connect if b isn't enable as well but you never know.
Check that it is set to mixed mode.
I had the exact same issues when upgrading from WM2003 to WM5. From what I could tell it appears to be an issue with encryption. If I switched encryption off on my router and made it an open connection, the problems went away. But I wasn't comfortable with this. Sadly the only solution I found was to revert back to WM2003.
thanks for the heads-up, I thought (/feared) it might be an encryption problemas router is on mixed mode and all the rest of it. Only reason i upgraded was it looked better and i thought it might work with GPS, will have to look up if GPS works with 2003SE before I downgrade I think. I'm glad i'm not the only one who has looked at there axim in bewilderment as the silly think connects and disconnects! If anyone out there has a solution let me know!
Here are two possible solutions from the WiFi Guide:
* If your device was able to connect initially but on subsequent attempts simply keeps scanning for networks but not connecting, there are a couple of possible solutions. The easiest is to delete all the extra networks listed on the Configure Wireless Networks page. In Axims with built-in WiFi, open the Wireless LAN utility, turn on the wireless, then tap the 'Setting' button on the Main screen. This takes you to the Configure Wireless Networks page. Hold your stylus on the name of each network and select 'Remove Settings' from the popup menu. If the network is shown as 'Available,' you'll need to move out of the range before it will allow you to remove the settings. [If the Remove Settings option is greyed out, then no settings have been stored for that particular network and it is showing in the list because you are within range of the access point.]
* If this does not solve the continuous scanning problem, then a registry setting may be at fault (as described by KySandman in this thread at Aximsite). To make the following changes, you will need a registry editor, such as PHM Regedit. [Note: Before making any changes to your registry, you should make a full backup of your PPC. Making a mistake in the registry could cause the device to no longer function and that will require a hard reset to recover.] Since the instructions in the Aximsite thread refer to the X30, the location of the Domain field will probably be different on your device. Search the registry for "TCPIP" or "Domain." Before making any changes, write down the exact location and current entry in the field. For example, on my device using a CF card with the Intersil Prism drivers, the domain value of interest is located at \HKLM\Comm\PRISM1\Parms\TCPIP. After making a note of its content, tap on the Domain field name, delete the Value, exit the registry editor, soft reset your PPC, enable wireless and test for a connection. If this does not fix the problem, I recommend restoring the entry before trying other solutions.

I don't think this solution would work as the Axim isn't constantly searching for networks; it simply want you to enter the encryption key every few minutes. Based on what I see with the icons on top of the screen, the connection doesn't appear to be lost.
I dont have to re-enter the encryption key, it just keeps connecting then losing it (even when it is the only thing connected to the router)
@ ikehiker i've tried the first method and tried the second before i posted in here but the registy editor did not get picked up by activesync (4.5) ... i think it said something about it not been desgined for my software so I havent tried the registry hack... although i will when i have some time!
Another solution could be if there was 3rd party software for the wireless card... assuming that PDAs work similar to PCs - excuse my "n00bness" if that is a stupid idea! Or maybe i should try connecting via the Odyssey client (which I do not understand / know if possible) instead of the dell WLAN device?
Anyway unfortunatly I do not have time to try any of these out today, but will post tomorrow when I have had a go at the registry again.

GPS works fine with 2003se. i have X50 runnin Destinator 6 with a BlueNext 909GR bluetooth receiver and never have any problems. I too have been considering upgrading to WM5, but after readin a lot of forums i've decided to get an X51V instead. It seems there's just too many problems with an X50 runnin WM5
I could not get the registry hack to work... partly probably as I did not really have enough time, so I chickened out and have reverted back to 2003SE A05 for the time being.... which works flawlessly and I forgot how much quicker my Axim works with 2003 compared to WM5, AMAZING!
Why do Dell release a software update which is buggy? I read a rumor in a forum that somebody was making an A03 version of WM5.... can't wait to try that out if it becomes available.
So, I have ordered a SD card so I can install a GPS program and am looking at GPS recievers, I have read much and as far as I can tell most GPS BT recievers should work with my Axim X50, such as GlobalSat BT-359 if I feel rich or the 308 if i'm poor. I expect this is the wrong place to ask the question but at least people can appreciate why I am using 2003SE, is there any reason why a bluetooth GPS reciever (such as the one listed above) will NOT work with my Axim X50.
Thanks to all of you who let me know I was not alone with WiFi problems!
p.s. I hate reflashing the Axim ever since when upgrading it to WM5 half way through my computer rebooted without BSOD or any warning, I am SO lucky it did not brick itself (the axim) although i certainly did!!:rolling:
