Question Linux Forum

I used to read this board 2-5 times a day when my Axim was at its peak performance. Lately, I rarely use it anymore. It has become a toy that I dont have time to play with. With as many apps and programs that exist for it, I still dont find myself pulling it out often enough. The only time I still come here to read is every few months I decide to check on the status of Linux on the X50. I am seeing that every 3-6 months, someone brings it back up, and it quickly dies out. If there was a dedicated subforum for linux, I am sure it would get more views, and that would in turn give it more support. Linux on the X50 would make the X50 series more powerful then most can imagine. Does anyone else here think we should have a subforum for Axim linux? Are you waiting for Linux?

Yes, I am waiting for a decent linux distribution to come out. If I remember correctly, the kernel over at handhelds.org could boot linux and the gui, but stuff like wi-fi and bluetooth wouldn't work. I think there would be major adoption if we could get everything to work as it does in Windows Mobile. Another plus would be making a nb0 file for linux and being able to flash it successfully. Could someone possibly make a new bootloader that can boot from flash rom and external media like SD or CF card?

Actually, there used to be a Linux subforum here. It must have been eliminated when the merger occurred and there were far too many subforums.

I have been checking this site forever and never saw the linux subforum. If there was one, it was too hidden to catch any attention. I have been checking the progress of other sites development on this, but I see nothing that works for the X50. Everything seems to work on the VGA versions. I personally think that a subforum thats easy to find would attract many more users/devs and get this project the attention it needs. Thank you for your votes ppl, Keep em commin!

I wouldn't mind linux support on pocket pc. If it works flawlessly. Setting up and maintaining a distro on a PC is just too much hassle, I would imagine it will be worse on a PPC or a Phone, unless it is commercially done and supported.

If only someone had time to take the latest kernel and tweak it for the Xscale processor. I say work on the kernel first, then the gui.

Last I read, teh kernel works, but doesnt do anything because the screen had little or no output. It seems like a graphics problem at this point (the Vga versions seem to have gotten farther) and not much has happened in the last year. Development seems to have halted (hance this thread)

Well, you still have wi-fi and bluetooth not working. There are other distributions out there for QVGA pocket pcs. Why not take a look and see how the iPaq distributions are different from the axim distributions.

Do you have any experience with linux at all (desktop or handheld) or any other evidence to back up that opinion of yours?

Wait, I thought you said Linux sucks all together. Do you know how much work has to be done since Dell (and/or HTC) won't publish hardware information for the axim? I must say it's more work than trying to make your own custom rom for the axim.
