Exclamation x50v battery expanded and opening door

I'm not sure if anyone else has experienced this or not, but I noticed my x50v was coming up saying the battery door had been opened and found the door was bent. On opening it I noticed the battery had expanded so much that it was forcing the door to bow open :(

Luckily I got 2 batteries when I bought my axim, so I just put the new one in. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and also whether I should throw the original battery away or if it'd be ok as a spare as it seems to still hold charge ok.

Some images of the battery and x50v:

Throw the expanded one away... Swelling batteries are never a good sign and it's probably a good thing you spotted it before it did some real damage

Usually heat causes this to happen. It could be that it got too hot in the car or possibly from some other software reason. If it only expands to that point you can probably keep it a bit longer but be very careful to keep it out of any further heat situation. The problem is that if it gets hot again it could expand further or even burst which would be a problem. At least that is what I have read in articles about the Lion battery. If it was mine I would keep it but keep an eye on it. When you are ready to get rid of it you should be 'green' and find a place to recycle it if you can. I started getting a few more than normal open battery cover alarms recently so I guess I better see if I have the same problem going on.

I might just get the battery recycled somewhere.

I think it happened when it was left on charge in the Dell cradle.

Take that battery to the nearest recycling/waste disposal site ASAP. When a lithium battery swells like that, there is an internal problem that may lead to explosion or fire. It's always best if you have a battery drop-off to get them recycled rather than introduced into the landfill. Many counties around the country have a program that takes old electronics and batteries free of charge.

I got the message last night that the battery door had been opened. The power light was flashing green until I okayed the message. Just checked the (extended) battery and it all looks normal, so hopefully that'll be and end to it. But I'll be checking for swelling for the next few weeks after reading the above posts.

The overcharge protection circuit might not be working, or it just may be the battery. Usually, it's the battery. Whatever you do, don't use it anymore. If it leaks, shorts, or starts getting really hot, it could really screw up your handheld. Not worth it.
