Aximsitex50icon x50v critical issue

Hey there folks!

TLDR VERSION IS DOWN THERE! :P

I have been using my X50v ever since the world was turning and it's always been good and we've certainly been trough a lot but I've always managed to solve st uff somehow :p . But now I have a very big problem. I am using X50v, A05 WM2003SE rom - and as we all know, WM2003 depends a lot on your battery and backup battery and if those fail, WM2003 loses data. The problem is, I do not use cradle nor charging adapter to charge my PDA - I simply bought another battery and I swap them. Why? Because the charging connector is not working anymore. When I first got my PDA I didn't know a lot of things and one of them that I know now is "DO NOT WORK WITH YOUR PDA WHEN IT'S CHARGING OR IN THE CRADLE!" because not only that heats up the connector to the point of melting plastic but also has a chance to damage your connector which is exactly what happened to me. The data cable does not work and nor does the charging.

TLDR VERSION:

1) My data connector in PDA is damaged
2) Every time I run out of battery or I swap it, I lose all my data
3) There is no way of charging my internal backup battery

so I have several options

1) Send my X50v to repair somewhere ? No, they won't repair my dell (cry me a river :'( )

2) Try to disassemble X50v and solder the connector or try to fix something (Is there a way to simply connect two cables one for + one for - simply for the sake of charging? I don't need the data connection at all! If you know of a way then point me in the right direction)

3) Use SD Image Loader and upgrade to WM2005 ( Two problems - I would need the bootloader and the image since I can't use the dell application... my data connector is damaged, remember? The second problem is I need a lot of free ram to be able to have my favorite GBA emulator running...)

So what now?

Is there a way to fix my X50v?

Thanks for any advice.

Yours sincerelly,

John 'Mad' Doe

EDIT:

Would that work for my Axim too? I am not afraid to disassemble it!

Since I am from Czech Republic, this would 1) take a long time and 2) be very pricey

Any other solution?

your reference to the backup battery link is moot for your situation. 50 and 51 are different for backup batteries.

I don't know your situation, but this looks pretty good from ebay.de aka Ebay - Germany

Dell Axim X51 + neuwertig + sehr viel Zubehör + Top PDA bei eBay.de: (endet 20.04.08 20:00:00 MESZ)

You might be better off getting a deal similar to this.

I don't want to give up on X50V because the main reason I use it for is watching movies and playing GBA games. Now - I need a good quality display which only the "v" variants can offer, plus, I need a very fast processor to be able to play the games I play without stuttering / putting aside that x50v has an optimized version of GBA emulator for it /.

X50v also has the 2700G chip that incredibly helps with video playback (coreplayer). I don't want to give up on this device, and if the repair cost equals more than half of the price I paid for new device, I might as well get a new one instead of repairing the old one. But still the question here is - do I really have to all this ?

Isn't there a simple way of soldering some pins on my axim and making a non-standart but functional charging connector? I don't care about warranty, it's long since I've lost it. And without being able to fix this problem, the device is useless. If I could only charge the internal battery somehow, that would be really great. It will last for ages 'till I have to do it again, just like last time (been using my axim for over three years)

So...?

So Screw it I said to myself! If the device is no use to me unless I do somehing, then I might as well go ahead and do it :D and so I did.

I will start with this - I didn't think it would work but I gave it a try :D

Basically what I did is I disassembled my X50v and first thing that struck me (literally because it fell out and hit me in my toe) was the connector! It "unsoldered itself" i guess so I looked at the contacts - the charging ones were done for - two from four burned off, rest was in poor shape
So I took a USB cable (just the cable with no connectors) and NORMAL (no seriously - I am not kidding, i used the normal big ass heavy transformator soldering thingy, not the one with pointy end (micro soldering thingy)) And soldered red and black cable to the axim's motherboard and then I put it back together (the cables are sticking out of the bottom end of axim now) and I plugged the second end in 5.4v charger by simply pushing one of the wires ( + ) inside the rounded thing and by pressing the other one against the side of the charging connector. The red light started shining :D IT WORKS :D so I made some sort of better connector on other side and now I'm charging my axim ! I will provide you with some photos if you want me to.

WARNING

the photos will not be for those faint of heart :D

I'd love pix

My axim is the same as yours, and I'm also doing the battery swap thing. I haven't had any trouble with the backup battery yet, though.
