x50 voice record slow to respond

I recently got an x50 (after using an iPaq 3850 since 2003) and I find the Notes voice record function on the axim slower that what I'm used to on the iPaq.

For instance:

- hitting the voice record button and saying "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, etc" into the device -- there is a 1-2 second delay before hearing the "blip" recording start indicator and the recording itself starts on the "3" not "1" -- I remember the iPaq being virtually instant with it's "blip" sound indicating recording start
- when I want to stop the recording -- either by hitting stop or releasing the voice record button -- there's a delay of a second or two before the "blip-blip" end record sound is heard, and it's more of a "blip (pause) blip" as if the unit is struggling
- this can get even slower if there are more notes or tasks on the unit; I did a hard-reset at one point and found voice record on the x50 almost as fast as the old iPaq, but once I synced the axim (with the same notes, tasks, etc that the iPaq had), voice record began to get sluggish again. I tried trimming the number of notes and tasks, but if the iPaq could handle it, why can't the axim?

Is this normal for the Axim x50? I thought the x50's superior processor would make everything go faster. Or maybe the iPaq engineers did some optimizations in their day that Axim didn't bother with.

Mine is the same way. I assume this is normal. :(

I don't use the record feature too much myself. :)

brain backup

I use the voice record all the time as a quick way to jot down an idea or a note before my brain forgets it. But with the Axim's sluggish response, I've lost a good chunk of my long term memory! Are the new iPaqs as sluggish in the voice recording area?

advice?

This is driving me crazy. I'm ready to toss the x50. A recording I just did at 44khz mono is missing chunks, which for a phone number is kinda useless. (And to think I wasted $80 just to get my ebay-bought x50 through Canada customs.)

I used to do 44khz mono voice records on my ipaq 3850 all the time and it always worked!

Are any of the other Axim models able to record voice memos normally or should I go back to the iPaq line and hp's crummy tech support?

If I look at the iPhone, it doesn't have an official voice memo application yet, but even if it did (or I were to install the unofficial VoiceNotes app), there is no voice memo button to initiate recordings, only a series of screen taps to perform. Which seems more cumbersome than the "push button, say words, release button" simplicity of Pocket PC.

Power setting

I think it was the power setting. When I switched it over to "Maximum Performance" everything became more responsive. Maybe the iPAQ 3850 didn't have that setting so it was a better voice recorder by default.

Trying to play back a notes recording this morning with "Maximum Performance" on and it was still choppy. Maybe I need to get a new device.

I also tried notem and it didn't have an option to launch into record with the voice button, so what's the point of that?

You can map the button yourself in the control pannel.
