Question Power Button Stuck On

Hi everyone,

I've researched this for days and I can't find a solution.

My power button on my x50v seems to be stuck. I can't turn the unit on or off and when I press the reset button on the back, the unit wants to hard reset.

I've had to remap the record button to turn off and I have to quickly switch the lock switch so that the unit stays off.

It still charges and syncs fine.

My question is this...will this somehow interfere with upgrading the OS? I'm running WM6 Classic Rom Version A02. I read somewhere that someone else was having a power button problem and when they upgraded to A09, their power button problem went away.

I'm not sure if its the same problem, and I don't want to brick my unit.

Would any of you have a solution/suggestion? Thank you!!

First - Welcome to Mobilitysite. Lots of good info & ppl here.

Second - It sounds more like a hardware issue. Has anything been spilled on your AX, or has it gotten wet somewhere?

You may have to read thru this thread, take the unit apart and see if anything is physically stuck. :exc:

If not, it may need the upgrade installed. Of course, there's a risk if you can't soft reset it. :(

Sounds like a hardware problem, perhaps you could take it apart and see if it will power on/off ok, you'd need it to get into the bootloader screen, and then to hard reset it.

@kcallahan Thanks for the suggestion. No, nothing was spilled on it. I treat it like my baby. The power button is not sticking or sticky. It presses like it should. I turned it on one night to read... (isilo) like I always do and I couldn't turn it off and still can't using the Power Button. I can still soft reset, but it boots to the hard reset screen... I have to press the mail button to cancel the hard reset.

@KimChee Thanks!! I'm going to try taking it apart, but what is the bootloader screen, exactly?

My x51 won't turn off either, or it is freezing. None of the buttons will do anything.
I can soft reset it, and then it works ok for a few hours.
I did just download Opera, maybe it is causing a glitch. Hmm....

Mine does that once in awhile too. You may want to check for the latest ROM update(s). If you're good there, do some file and memory cleanup. :)

Blades did you install opera to main memory? I found that certain programs like Opera and spb mobileshell will freeze the axim if not stored in main memory after a power off/on.

The button on the case simply has an extension that reaches down to a board-mounted pressure sensitive button.

In order to replace that board button, you'd have to know some soldering.

You could try to power the unit with the lower shell still in place, but you will have to figure out a way to hold in the main battery and board.

Me too

This is exactly what mine is doing too, and it just started one day out of the blue. I had it sitting in the cradle, and when I debooted (my own word invention--I love it) my computer at bedtime I found that I couldn't turn the Axim off.

It functions perfectly while sitting in its cradle (except for the power button of course), but the only way I can turn it off is to take it out of the cradle and unplug the battery. The only way I can turn it on is to pop it back into its cradle, where it automatically springs to life.

I had it apart last weekend and could find nothing wrong. The power switch looks, feels, and "seems" to operate as it should. It still makes the precise-feeling "click" that it always made.

I am competent with a soldering iron and doing precision work, but who's to say it's actually the power switch? What if it's whatever should be reading the power switch input that went wrong?

I now own an Axim that only operates in a cradle, so it's not a total loss, but that sort of defeats the purpose of having a portable digital assistant...

Anyone have any updates or ideas?

Rick
