I am also having the same problem. I purchased a new battery with a sync/charge cable and have had this unit connected to a usb port for almost 24 hours and the light is still amber. Yesterday the light did turn green for a very short time, there was instructions on the screen for a hard reset. I canceled the reset and all I get now is the amber light. I have tried a soft and hard reset which has not worked. The battery compartment is locked but the side is not locked (ie no red showing). The prior owner let the axim totally discharge. I have also tried an hp ac travel charger with a usb attachment which is 5.5 v dc , 1.0 A, but that also does not help the charge the battery. As the batteries are discharged is it possible I need to buy a Dell ac adapter opposed to charging with a sync cable? Perhaps I need I simply purchased a lemon.
my x50v is also dead. It was left for a long time uncharged. I have the AC charger but no usb cable.
If i leave it on charge the light will eventually go green but it wont turn on. Also tried soft and hard reset, checked the locked switch.
In my thread, someone said that it should power up even if the backup batt is dead. Does anyone know for sure if this is true?
I don't know about the backup battery question, but have you tried removing the main battery and reinserting it? And are you running WM5? They seem to have the most problems.
OK, i had many problem with my x50v. And when battery is totally uncharged, and axim doesn't start, the only way is to charge it in original ac charger, or in car charger. There is no other way. It's because original chargers can make enough volts and ampers. USB cable doesn't make good conditions to charge battery. Sorry for my bad english:)
old post, but did you finally found what was wrong?
Was it the backup battery? or the main one?
Mine is doing the same thing. alway's an Orange light when it sit on the "china aftermarket" cradle, but does not power on.
No more success with the provided usb cable (12-14 hours connected)
I bought my axim used and the usb cable looks like an aftermarket one too, I hope it didn't killed my AXIM :(

If your main battery is too low it will probably never charge from the USB cable. It would need to be charged in the cradle. Is your cradle connected to power, other than thru a USB connection? If not, you need a power source to charge the battery other than USB. :exc:

I have a similar problem...I left my x50 uncharged for a while and now, after charging it on the AC cradle, it wont boot up. Power light is green, did a hard reset, removed the battery and checked the lock slider.
Any other suggestions? should I get a new battery?
When you say it won't boot up, do you mean you get no screen at all? Or just the Dell screen and nothing else? Try leaving the battery out for a longer period of time (if you haven't already) - like at least a few hours.
No screen at all, non responsive (except for the power light). No Dell Screen.
I'll add I tried to charge the battery separately; after the charger stand indicated the battery was charged (green light), I reinserted the battery into the x50. No change.
