x50V Upgrade

I am making a once in a lifetime trip to Europe in March and would like to updgrade my Windows mobile to 5 or 6 from 2003 SE. First is this possible. Second, where can I purchase a copy of either? I've looked and being the technical defect that I am, I can't figure it out.

Basically I have a SDHC (4 gig) card that I use with my camera and want to upload pictures to the web and cannot figure out my problems. And plus my Axim will not recognize a 1 or 2 gig card either.

Yes, you can upgrade to wm5/6 but be aware that the x50 series was never really good with the persistent storage feature of wm5+. The x51 series is much better with this. You will more than likely notice a speed reduction.

Also, with 2003se you can read up to 4gb sd cards, you just have to get a regular (non-hc) sd card. Newegg is one of the only places that sells them. Your axim should read 1 and 2gb cards fine. If you tried to install the sdhc driver on it with 2003se, uninstall it. This driver is for wm5 and ruins 2003se's sd card abilities until its uninstalled. Or hard reset to get rid of it.

Wm5 will read 4gb sdhc cards fine and some bigger cards with the driver i mentioned before. Wm5 was released by Dell for the x50 series, but they botched it so dont expect it to be perfect.

Wm6 was made by regular people at the xda.developers forum. It isnt supported by dell and may brick your device if you dont do it right. But if you can pull it off and dont mind a speed reduction vs 2003se, you get the latest wm os along with new software.

The transition for me (to WM5) was not really difficult. I just made sure to read and
re-read the proper steps, taking no shortcuts.

One thing I may have had an issue with is I think I had to install a version 4.x
of activesync before doing the upgrade. I had more problems with AS than anything
else.

Aximsitemobileicon wm5 upgrade to x50v

I tried to upgrade my x50v from wm2003se to wm6 using the instructions posted here

Dell Axim X50v WM6 A01 (MagLite Edition) - xda-developers

Try as I might, kept reporting that it could not find a valid image file on my sd card. Pushing the action key twice didn't help.

Any suggestions welcome.

thanks!

I haven't flashed my x50v but on my x51v, the SD card has to be formatted FAT32. Is you card formatted correctly?

You should format the card just prior to loading the two files needed to flash your Axim.

I had issues with a FAT32 SD card until I re-formatted it.

Can you explain? The Axim Bootloader can only flash .nb0 and .crc
If you have a .img file, I'll be happy to convert that for you.

Don't understand your question. The first instruction on the link provided by Matzoh Man says to "1) Unpack files from archive into root of FAT32 SD-Card". If Matzoh Man is using a FAT formatted SD card it won't work. Also, it won't work if he's using a SDHC card.

@ Matzoh Man, please start a new thread for your question. Do not hijack this thread.

This is the complete instruction for flashing WM6.1 for your x50v. Please read and follow all directions carefully/

I personally recommend LennySh's WM6.1 A09 for x50v. There are some issues with Maglite's ROM that is fixed with Lenny's. You have to register at Lenny's site, I doubt you would want to. So I uploaded the file on my Windows Live Skydrive. Here is the files. (Press "Download")

1. Now extract the .rar file

2. You should receive these two files: WM50_K_A09_X50v_WM61_EN.nb0 and WM50_K_A09_X50v_WM61_EN_nb0.crc

3. Copy both files on your a SD card. That SD card should be formatted FAT32.

4. Please backup EVERYTHING. Meaning sync your Axim and manually copy any files and documents in a temporary folder. Since the programs cannot be backed up, just make a list of them and maybe their settings so you can reinstall them later.

5. Once you have backed up EVERYTHING, we will proceed to the bootloader.

6. Press and HOLD the Power button and the Wi-Fi button (The Wi-Fi button is on the site, underneath the lock switch)

7. While holding the two buttons, use your stylus and press the reset hole

8. While still holding the two buttons, release the reset hole

9. Wait for a screen to pop up, then release the Power and Wi-Fi button

10. If nothing happens, repeat Steps 6-9 again. If a screen pops up asking you to reset, press Cancel (The mail hard button)

11. Now if you were successful, it should say Gx (x= a number) bootloader. Underneath, you should see a file name highlighted. If not, please stop by press the power button. Then tell us

12. Now press the Action button (It is the center button on your D-Pad) TWICE.

13. A progress bar should appear. Please DO NOT let the power run out, meaning please plug it into a cradle.

14. Once the process is done, it should ask your to reset. Press the Calendar button to accept.

15. It will hard reset and you will be presented with some customization options (Time zone, etc...).

16. You are all set!

I know it's a long post, sorry for that. If you have any questions, feel free to post it here

You got me Box. I'm not sure if SDHC works with the bootloader. I have always used a 2GB Sandisk SD card. I will update the post.
