I tried updating my OS to WM6. After it said it was complete it told me to do a hard reset. After I did a hard reset it wouldnt turn back on. I called Dell and since they dont support them anymore I decided to send it to a PDA repair site. They told me that the motherboard was ruined and that it would cost $150 to replace it.
I am just curious if a failed update would actually ruin the motherboard? That sounds a bit far fetched but I could be wrong. And secondly is there a way that I can purchase a motherboard and replace it myself? Im just trying to go through my options to see if it is cost effective to get it fixed or just by a new one. Thanks
Update:
So I still have my non-functional x50v. Here are the sympoms:
Will not power on, however orange light illuminates when connected to AC. Have tried hard reset.
From reading on some other forums, I am wondering if a SD flash of the motherboard would resolve the problem. Or if I need to just forget about it all together. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Yep, I concur a reflash would easily fix this problem.

Give me a day to upload the X50v WM5 A02 rom pack.

Several days after the update to WM 6.1, my cradle broke, and presumably my x50v's power supply drained in time it took me to get a replacement. It was working fine before that. After I got a replacement USB cable, I tried to turn it on, and was greeted by a "memory error" message. Around a second after this message appears on screen, the device shuts off again. I tried turning it on a few more times, and I had that message a few more times, but now it's stopped responding to the power button altogether. Reset + Power makes the LED flash, but does not produce the hard reset screen, and similarly for Reset + Power + Wireless.
Bricked? I would gladly flash the motherboard, if I could even get the bootloader to appear on screen, since I haven't gotten that far yet.
#edit
Apparently this happens if the battery is dead. My replacement charge cable was defective. I ordered a new cradle, had it charge for a few hours and my PDA now works perfectly.

Reason: solution
Thanks for the replys. I seem to be having some issues. I read the sticky recommended above which seemed to be very informative. I posted this. No replies yet.
"I tried upgrading to WM5 from 2003, resulting in a "bricked" X50V. I read all the reflash options. How am I supposed to know if the bootloader has been flashed successfully or not. Is there supposed to be any sort of activity on the screen when pushing wif+power+reset? Thanks for the help?"
I put in a SD card with the downloaded files, pushed the wifi+power+reset, but nothing happened on the screen. The battery is good because the power button is green, however the screen is black, and shows no signs of life.
1. Press the power and wi-fi together at the same time
2. While holding the two, poke the reset hole
3. While still holding the two, stop poking the reset hole
4. When a screen shows up release the power and wi-fi button
5. You should be able to see your files on the SD card, if not, tell us
6. Now press the action button (The small button in the middle of the d-pad) twice
7. Wait for the flashing to finish (Times can vary, please do NOT let the battery run out)
8. Finish the initial customization and you are all set!

Thanks for the tip. It turns out i was doing it wrong. However now I cant find the exact ROM to load. When I boot from flash the initial screen says "SD Image Update A02". The various ROMs i have tried all give a error like "no suitable image". I got got one to go a bit further, and it seemed to complete however it was for a X50 not a X50V. Anything else?
Let me check in my vast inventory of ROMs for Axims. If I don't have it, I'll be happy to convert it for you and upload it.

Unfortunately, I do not have any WM2003 ROMs. I'll convert it from the Dell download. But that will take maybe a day or so as this is on my low priority tasks. :) Hope you understand.
Regards
John

If your Axim physically says x50v, you do have a x50v.

Ok, update:
I recently learned from my friend Steven that you cannot convert WM2003 .img files to .nb0. So, refer to his sticky here. Just download the WM2003 A05 for x50v. Your Axim will just be upgraded.

Finally!! Thanks everyone. To be honest my brother gave this to me and I was trying to upgrade the OS the first day. So I didnt have a chance to play around on it. What do I need to do if I want to upgrade to WM5? Or should I just be happy with 2003...(and a working PDA)...
I infer from what other members said that WM5 on the Axim X50(v) is not a pleasant experience. I concluded that it was slow and unresponsive. So my personal suggestion is that you stick to WM2003.
Whether you upgrade to WM6 for x50v is another personal choice for you. There are two, maybe three, options available.
I believe Steven (from above), is currently creating or is already finished a x50v ROM. Feel free to PM him for details.
Good luck!
~John
