Question Purchased used X50v ... need advice

Hi everyone !!! Been a while since I visited this forum. Glad to see some familiar names are still here. :)

I just purchased a used Axim X50v, and it has WM6 A02 (18.09.07) installed.

I went to the XDA-developers website, and determined it was the MagLite_RUS A02 version.

Previously I have been using an Axim X30 with PPC 2003se.

My new X50v has practically nothing installed. It was hard-reset at the time of purchase. The only things I loaded so far were a few Google Mobile apps (maps, email) which I obtained directly from Google's website.

There are several problems that I am immediately noticing on my X50v.

1) When browsing the internet, my X50v takes a very long time to load large webpages, like large threads from forums similar to mobility-site.

2) When these large pages finally do load, and I try to scroll up/down, it takes forever to make these pages advance forward and backward. On my X30, these same pages load much faster, and scroll with absolutely no problems?

3) This morning I had trouble connecting to my home WiFi. So after rebooting my router and cable modem, I noticed my X50v required that I re-enter the WEP key. For some reason, when the X50v has issues connecting to my WiFi, it deletes the WEP key I had previously typed in, and forces me to re-key it in. My X30 never had this problem?

4) I have no slider switch to adjust memory between Storage and Program. Is this feature no longer available in WM 6?

5) Should I load a different ROM than the one I have now? Which is the version people currently favor the most on their X50v? Or should I consider downgrading it back to PPC 2003 SE?

6) The female connector on the bottom of my X50v (for attaching to cradle, USB, charging, etc) does not working consistantly, so I plan to charge my batteries outside in the cradle, and then use WiFi for synching instead of cradle/usb. I'll then load new apps either from .cab files loaded to an SD card, or from a WiFi sync.

Since I am having trouble with my bottom connector, can I apply a ROM upgrade while powering my X50v from a battery, instead of using AC power?

7) In general ... have people been mostly happy with their X50v's? I do like the high-res VGA screen, but are they too much of a hassle otherwise? I am very surprised to see my older X30 seems to work better in some ways than my newer X50v?

I had originally planned on buying a used X51v, but the price of this used X50v was too good to pass up, even with the connector issue.

Thanks for everyone's help with my above questions !!! :)

1 & 2) Maybe try clearing the IE cache and history?

3) That is a confirmed bug with encryption. I think the only solution is a hard reset

4) That feature was only available in WM2003SE

5) Give Lenny's WM6.1 A09 Test 2 a try. Maybe you will like it better.

6) Please make sure you have fully batteries. Even then, it is risky. Using an extended (2200mAh) battery, I think you will be better off.

7) Personally I think my x50v works faster and better than my x51v. But then again, my x51v has a lot of stuff/crap on it...

Johnhu .... thanks for the response!

1&2) I tried deleting the IE files and history, but it wasn't a huge improvement in speed. I can see this PDA is using a lot of Program Storage when IE is running. I go from around 30MB free to around 8mb free. And even after I delete the files and history, I only get back a few more mb. And I verified that IE was the only program running, so nothing else would have been using Program Storage at the same time.

The one thing I did notice on the X50v, is when I use single-column view in IE, it is slower than desktop view (probably since reformatting the page takes time). But viewing webpages on my X50v is still much slower than my X30.

3) Thanks. I did see other people had this issue too. Hoped someone would have had a solution for it.

4) Shame they took away the memory slider. I use it often on my X30.

5) Thanks for the LennySh ROM info. I may give it a try. I did read about it on XDA forums.

I was just wondering if the majority of X50v owners have settled on a ROM that is recommended above all others at this point?

I'm also still debating whether to restore this PDA to WM2003SE? I just learned that WiFi ActiveSync was removed as of WM5, so that will make life difficult for me since my X50v's cradle/usb connector is faulty, and I was planning to use WiFi for syncing.

6) Yes .. I have a few 2200ma batteries. That's what I will be using. Just wondering if anyone else has flashed their ROM using battery power?

7) Hopefully I'll like the X50v better than my X30 at some point ... but right now it's too unstable to appreciate, other than the much better VGA screen.

Frankly, WM2003SE does work faster and sometimes more reliably than WM6. But the only reason I keep WM6 is because of its compatibility with a lot more programs. Lenny's ROM might be faster. So again, you can try it out.

I am unsure of WiFi Activesync as I never used it. I do know Bluetooth Activesync works.

Try running Opera, that is my preferred browser now.

I have flashed the my x51v on batteries before. That was because my cradle broke and I really wanted to test Football's new ROM. The flashing process usually takes anywhere from 10-40 minutes. I'm sure a fully loaded battery can easily handle 40 minutes.

Thanks again Johnhu! You have been a great help. :approve:

Now I feel better knowing that I can flash using batteries. :)

I'll fully charge one of my 2200mah, and test it to make sure it will last an hour running some type of application before using it to flash.

Also, I just purchased a Bluetooth USB adapter for my PC, so I'm going to give it a try for syncing.

Thanks for the tip about Opera. Will give that a try as well.

Opera Mini 9.5 beta 2 is great! :) It's reason enough to keep WM 6.

It is much better than IE.

I was blown away the way it showed the entire webpage on the screen, rather than a reformatted version.

Also really like the way you drag the stylus across the screen for scrolling.

Love the double-tap zoom feature.

Only wish it could use the SD card for temp storage. I had a "out of memory" message come up when I tried to display a webpage with a few large embedded photos.

I decided I am going to try installing this version of WM6, created my Makuu at XDA:

[X50V] ROM WM6.1 VOIP Professional (WWE/GER/ITA/ESN/FRA) - xda-developers

Seems like the most praised one at this time.

I concur, I have stopped using PIE when I tried out Opera.

I believe you can change the location of both the PIE cache and the Opera cache using Memmaid.

From personal experience with Makuu's x51v ROMs, he has a lot more programs embedded on his ROMs. Some people may like it, so there's nothing to stop you from trying it out. Personally, I favor Lenny.
