I did a hard reset today again and got the same problem yet again so here's hoping that the replacement is fine. Seems like the X3i had the same problem last year....

I called Dell yesterday about this problem and they are sending me a replacement unit... we shall see if that corrects the problem, which for me , is quite a nuisance since i use a BT connected phone to connect to the internet while out of the building/home and 802.11b when within range of my wireless acccess point... i have to soft-reset about 6 times a day on average, which is unacceptable.

I notice that the error says "unrecognised network card in socket 2" and the error on the X3i was "socket 1". Is it possible that SD cards and CF cards are in these sockets and the OS or hardware somehow thinks to check these locations for wifi cards (before the inbuilt card) and when it finds that they are not wifi cards then gives this error? Any thoughts? I have removed my SD card and it seems to be so far so good.....(obviously that is not a long term solution though).

X50V - WLAN Utility - Unrecognized Card ??
Hi - I've got a X50V -
When I attempt connecting (hit "Turn On") in the WLAN Utility - I get a box that states "Unrecognized Card" and it asks that I enter the name of the device driver for this card . . .and there's a box that states "Network Card in Socket 2". Asking me "OK" or "Cancel".
This has happened 2 or 3 times and has corrected itself (leaving me with no idea why it happened or how it fixed itself.)
Anyone have any clues as to what's going on?
(I left this message on the Dell Boards. . .it appears that I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. If I get an answer I'll post it here.)
Thanks.
Patrice

First Post, same problem. Here is the string of emails I exchanged with Dell support....might help someone. I have <snipped> the useless parts and 'anonymized' it somewhat...
**************************
Dear XXXXX:
Since the previous email agent is not available today, I am replying to
your message so that we can solve your problem as quickly as possible.
As I understand from your e-mail, you have performed the
troubleshooting
steps but the issue still persists.
Please accept my apology for the difficulties you have encountered with
the technical issues. I assure you that this situation is not
indicative
of the quality service Dell is capable of providing.
Richard, after going through the problem description, I have come to a
conclusion that you have a failing Axim. Since this is a new unit, I
will replace it for you.
Please provide the information requested below so I can setup your
service:
1. Contact Name:
2. Address: (from your original order/ invoice)
3. Current Shipping Address: (Address, City, State, and Zip) No PO
Boxes
please:
4. Daytime Phone Number:
5. Alternate Contact/ Phone:
6. Order Number:
7. Customer Number:
8. Service Tag Number:
9. Address you would like the system returned to, if different from the
shipping address above.
Please reply with the requested information so that I can setup the
service at the earliest.
Thank you for choosing Dell.
Respectfully,
Sheredon

Nancy,
Thanks for the assistance. Here were the results:
1. Reseated the fillers (both the SD and the CF pieces). Problem still
occurs.
2. Soft reset seems to fix the problem temporarily. If the system is
put in standby, and then reactivated, the problem reoccurs. Not sure
if
I mentioned this in the original email, but the problem seems to be
somehow tied to enabling the wireless device. If I leave the wireless
device (both bluetooth and wifi seem to be linked together?) disabled,
the error does not occur. After reenabling the wireless device (via
the
button on the side of the device), the error appears.
3. Hard reset did not have result different than from the soft reset -
temporary fix, but problem reoccurs.

Dear XXXXXXXX,
Thank you for contacting Dell Technical Support.
After reading your email, I understand that a message pops up on a
regular basis "Unrecognized Card - Enter the name of the device driver
for this card. For information, see the card manufacturer's
documentation. Network card in Socket 2 OK Cancel".
XXXXX, I would request you to perform these steps and check if this
resolves the issue or not.
1. Reseat the filler.
- Remove the filler from the top of the Axim.
- Insert the filler piece into the slot.
2. Perform a soft reset on the Dell Axim X50 handheld.
NOTICE: The soft reset will reboot the Axim X50. Any file that is open
at that time may be lost, but all saved data and programs will remain.
- Turn on the Axim, if it is not already on, by pressing the power
button.
- Push the reset button on the back side of the Axim with the stylus.
NOTE: Unscrew the black tip of the stylus and use that to push the soft
reset button.
3. Hard reset the Dell Axim X50.
NOTICE: Performing a hard reset of the Axim system will erase all data
on the system. Please ensure that all necessary backups have been
created prior to proceeding.
- Turn on the Axim, if it is not already on, by pressing the power
button.
- Hold the power button down and press the reset button at the same
time.
NOTE: Unscrew the black tip of the stylus and use that to push the soft
reset button
- Press the Contacts button to reset the system.
- Press the Mail button to cancel without losing data.
Please check if the issue is resolved. If not, please revert to us with
the detailed description of all the steps performed and the results of
the same. In case you need any other assistance or information, please
do inform us. We will be glad to assist you in resolving the issue.
Thank you for choosing Dell.
Respectfully,
Nancy

This seems to be public enemy #1 when it comes to the x50's. As I understand it this is actually a conflict in 2003SE that Dell's setup has aggrivated. A software fix should be able to take care of it so here's hoping that an update is coming soon.

I do not know a permanent fix to this either but managed to limit frequency with which it occurs. It is somehow linked to available memory.
1. Make sure that you have no programs installed in built-in storage unless they really insist on being there
2. Move "My documents" out from the main memory i.e to built-in or SD/MC/MMC card. The same with outlook attachments
3. If you were successfull the memory occupied by installed programs will be well below 5 MBytes
4. Move slider splitting memory between storage and program to increase programs memory but stay above 7MBytes free for storage.
If you go below 7MBytes the slider will soon rebounce back to 50-50 free space arrangements.
5. WiFi and Bluetooth will start together only if you have lots of free program memory, approx 30 MBytes free, each single one is happy with 22MBytes.
Software reset does just that- it free's up memory.

Wow I didn't think about the memory requirements of Wifi/BT. Would be interesting to hear about other users' experience of how much memory is required.

I got the same response from them and have my replacement unit. Unfortunately this has the same problem and I saw from this site that the X3i did too - so to me it appears to be a software issue. I am hoping the ROM update which people have been talking about will solve the issue.

Poll Time- x50v Memory Error when using BlueTooth & Wifi
Hello all-
Like many of you I've been experiencing the occasional memory error when I switch between Bluetooth and Wifi on the x50v. I'd have a "knack" for getting attention to issues and I'd like to try and get an answer from Dell about this problem. Before I call and write my letters to Dell, I would like to know how many x50v owners are experiencing this problem. I plan to end this poll on 12/11/04.
Please vote and I’ll do my best to get a response.
Brian
