WiFi AdHoc Setup Frustrations >.<
Hi guys, I really need help with this problem. I've spent a good part of a day trying to work out why it wont work but to no avail =\ and yes, i have read the guides at wifi.aximsite.com already...
Basically the x50v finds the pc adhoc connection and connects to it when i turn on wifi except it just totally dies and says no signal in less than a minute. the signal strength is excellent since im right next to it and I have been tearing my hear out trying to figure out why the signal keeps dropping even thuough the wifi card is still sending out beacon signals(light flashes constantly).... the wireless card on the pc is a MSI PC54G2 PCI wireless card... anyone here have experience with this card??
I have tried giving both my pc wifi card and x50v a static ip since for some reason dhcp isnt enabled and i have no idea where to get it enabled... pc = 192.168.0.1, x50v=192.168.0.2
in the less than 1 minute that it does establish a connection each time i can ping the x50v so i know it is connected. strangely enough, the axim still thinks im "connected" to the pc even when it says no signal and i have to manually turn off and on wifi on axim again to recognise the connection.
any help really appreciated
edit: just to add, both the pc wifi card and the axim has no probs connecting to a neighbour's wireless network so its not a hardware problem

I remember someone saying they had to turn on the wireless on their PPC first, then the wireless on the PC in order to get an ad-hoc connection to work.
Do you have ICS enabled on the internet connection on your PC? It's what should be providing the DHCP server functions.

I'm glad you're a little closer. I suspect the Internet connection problem is related to the DHCP not working. The only thing I can think of that might be interferring is a firewall. If you have one running on the PC, try disabling it. In some cases, you actually have to stop firewalls from loading when the computer boots up.

It seems like many users have had problems with ad-hoc (with any PPC, not just the X30). I'm afraid I don't have any other suggestions. have you disabled any firewalls like I suggested in my last post? Even the WinXP built-in one (especially if you are using SP2).

i'm just wondering if the wifi chip in my ppc is faulty and should exchange my axim and see how a replacement works... now i cant even sustain a net connection to my neighbour's wireless network for any longer than 5-10mins... and yes, sp2's firewall is off as well
anyway thanks for your help ikehiker

I called Dell Tech support today about the same problem. I go to the utility WLAN and watch my signal jump around. The Tech had me do a hard reset and it still did it. It would go to good, normal, poor and then no signal. I had a Linksys WCF 12 Card and it works great.
After trying everything the tech had me to do. They decide that it was defected and is going to send me another X50.
I sure hope that this is not a general problem with these units.

okay guys, just to update, after 1 more day of messing around with my settings, I finally got everything working ^.^
currently posting this msg via wifi on my x50v =)
for those interested on how I finally got it all worrking and this may hellp some other people who have had similar problems:
1. firstly I enabled a "software gateway" that came with my MSI adapter that basically emulates the workings of a router on your PC
2. next I set static IP for the ppc as and used odyssey to connect in as the dell wlan connecting to "work" was still droppping my wifi connection almost immediately after it connects.
3. lastly, to get the net working on the axim, I also had to input a static DNS IP Address of my ISP and voila! it was in business.
Hope this may be helpful to others who still has wifi woes to give it a try

I Found some bugs on multiple AXIM X50s
1- The PPC won't receive a DHCP Ip adress on Ad Hoc Connections if it's the first wireless device on the network. (I tested this on different X50s) As soon that I Connect another wireless device on that network, then everything runs smoothly.
2- The Green signal status doesn't appear on ad-hoc connections.
I guess there's still some work to do on the Wifi.
