Q for Computer Guru: NEW Axim fried 2 motherboards. Is that possible?
Dell Precision 400sc
Axim x50mid
Problem:
Recieved Axim x50 12/16. Connected it to my Dell and it wouldnt recognize. Rebooted several times and nothing. Everything worked fine except USB. (USB does power my webcam to light up, but wont recognize it). Plugged Axim to Compaq laptop and it recognized and synced fine.
Temp Solution:
Called Dell. They say it couldnt be the Axim, but after 90minutes support confirmed the USB ports are dead. Sent a motherboard which i installed today and everything synced fine. Several hours later came back from work, plugged in Axim and computer froze. Reboot and no USB again.
So im extremely pleased with Dell support, but im worried that theyll blame this on "user error". But it seems like the Axim is whats doing this to me. Luckily ive got them cornered because they cant play the blame game since both are dell products. But i am curious to see if in any way this could be my fault and not the Axim.

You're not the first to report this. It seems that it's easy to plug the Axim into the cradle incorrectly, and that will cause a short which is capable of killing motherboards.

I plugged in my axim one day and the entire computer shut off. It ended up hitting the surge protector reset button. I dont know if I overpowered my PSU, its a 300w with and x800, 2 cd drives, 2 hds, a floppy, and mobo attached to it.

As you may have seen, I had a bum cradle that fried 2 motherboards as well - non-Dell motherboards. I am in the midst of "negotiations" to get them to compensate me in some manner. Problem is, the CS manager isn't returning my calls. They sent me a replacement order: not just the cradle but the X50v and everything else (cables, ac adapter, etc...). Until I get some satisfaction WRT the motherboards, they won't be getting the old X50v back. :D

^^They'll just charge your account for the extra x50...they have a policy about that...

I'm pretty sure that you could take them to small claims court... if they don't show up you get default judgement... or something like that.

I actually got a call back from the Dell Axim support division. Im on hold with them now. It seems to be overseas support, but the fact that they are following up on this without me even asking for a follow up is very impressive.
As for the support, its more of the same. "It couldnt possibly be the axim". But i told them that a 3rd motherboard is arriving today so unless they get me a solution then i'll probably fry another usb controller and with these boards costing $193 a pop then its costing them alot of money and us alot of time.
Okay, well i got the rep back and he's sending me a new axim/cradle but NO BATTERY. He says its the first hes ever heard of this so he wants to follow up. Considering the amount of hassle im goign through then im starting to feel like i deserve to keep BOTH axims in the end... I probably will follow the rules and return it, but maybe if they could just send me a bluetooth adapter for the PC so i wont have to mess with cradle syncing.

I think that small claims court will be what I have to threaten unfortunately. They have my credit card number and I have an account with DFS which they could easily charge. Crap :-(
Second message has been left and it is now nearing the end of the afternoon - no return call from Dell. Bleh... :(

Is this a major problem with all axim x50's (x50 mid?)? If so remind me not to order one.

Uh, you need MUCH more than 300 W for that system, at least 380-400 of a brand name power supply such as antec with stable power rails. The x800 alone is going to pull a good 100 watts, then your processor a good 70-80, and adding multiple hard drives and CD rom drives is just asking for trouble.

This is the third person I've heard of this happening to, out of who knows how many X50 users on this site. Pretty safe gamble. Get a USB hub to plug the X50 into if you're worried (USB hub would most likely fry instead of your motherboard). I'm guessing there's just a handfull of bad cradles/X50s that are motherboard friers.
