This is nothing to do with the cards. It is a software bug in the A01 ROM. I sometimes got this error message, but by no means always. I find that if I click on "OK" or "Close", the error message clears and the Axim recognises the card perfectly well.

But I think the an upgrade to the A02 ROM fixes the bug. I haven't had this error message since upgrading anyhow. :approve:

the AO2 Rom description does mention improved speed for CF and SD card so maybe,so it seems a good possibility this could be the case

Worried

Try formatting the card in an non-axim device (digital camera, computer) and IMPORTANT: give it a device-label.
I'm still running an A00 firmware (german) and have severe issues with my 1GB MD getting corrupted after beeing accessed in the axim.
I even have some nice screenshots showing endless recursive directories with weird names - probably a bug in the axim firmware.

The A02 ROM update did NOT fix this issue. I see in another thread that apparently a Toshiba e830 owner is also experiencing this same problem with his unit after upgrading to WM2003SE so my guess is that this is a microsoft problem and not a dell hardware problem.

My main frustration with the x50v is that even when the CF card does work (which is usally), it is PAINFULLY slow. Can't play any .wmv files (video) in WMP10 (it errors - copy to BIS and works fine...) and even regular .wma music files routinely skip when playing from the CF slot. I've tried this with two different CF cards from different manufacturers. One is a 4GB Lexar 80x card so its not the card that is the slouch... VERY frustrating.

I just wish Dell and/or Microsoftw would come out and acknowledge this commonly encountered problem by so many of us rather than allowing us to continue to waste time bantering like this in forums...

Update:
I've found that my microdrive won't be detected unless it has a regular file at root-level and a device label - but my prob is: the subdirs and files are not accessible (junk data gets displayed) - no matter what I tried (formatting,fat16,fat32,shortfilenames, resets...)...

I bought a Kingston 2GB Elite Pro. Had it about half full and used it for about five days, then my X50V wouldn't recognize it. I put the CF card in my card reader and it had problems reading it also.
Switched to a different 1GB card in the card reader (with no problems) and then back to the 2GB for one last try before assuming the CF card died.
This time the card reader saw it, so I copied everything to my hard drive. Used Windows XP to check for problems, but nothing. Put it back in my Axim and still it didn't recognize it.
I then put it back in the card reader, reformated it, reloaded all the data that I had copied to the hard drive, then tried it again in the Axim. This time the Axim read it right away. Simce I'm using this card to navigate across the country, I'm just going to use a second CF card to duplicate all fo the maps and data in case this happens again.
