Don't know - I havn't had mine work long enough to find out. I have now had 3 Axims and all have refused to power up after a night in the recharge cradle. May be I am unlucky (or they are shipping all the faulty devices to customers in the UK ...)
mine does the same thing... I am going to try the rom update tonight and try it again after charging overnight. Did you try the rom update?

Even in the thread you keep pointing to tabten5 reported he had no problems with file transfers and gigi pointed out that the problem with file transfers is more likely to be the well knows problem with big files and activesync than BT.

It is reasonable to assume that because it works for me it should work for anyone who follows the same processes. All of us with the save model have the same ROM image (the only one that exists) and so the software is the same. I strongly suspect we have the same hardware, as there are, at this time, no known variations in the X50 series other that Low, Mid and V. So, if it works for me and not for someone else, then it is reasonable to assume that something that other person is doing differently from me is most likely the culprit. I've been in the software business for thirty years and software simply doesn't choose for whom it will work and for whom it won't. It works or not, depending on how it is used and invoked, not who invokes or uses it. And if it fails for one person, it will fail for another in exactly the same way if the exact same use/invocation is followed.

I wish you good luck with it. It's working for me, following my process. It's up to you whether or not to follow the same.
I guess for some of us, we expect BT to start even though other applications are already running in the background. I agree that most of the time if you start BT before anything else, you won't see the error. But it seems silly to me that you need to clear everything else before using BT- if that's what you’re implying. Seems like a hassle to shutdown Agenda Fusion or any other apps that consume lots of memory before you can use BT- just my opinion. Don’t you agree? If we all had to shutdown any open applications (or perform reboots) on our desktops before using Outlook we all would be crying bloody murder :)

To summarize, I think there are two camps of people here: 1) users who deal with the problems through workarounds (such as the methodical process you follow) 2) Others who have higher expectations and expect to run BT when there’s 10 Meg of memory free on the PPC.

Perhaps if someone @ Dell or MS would just fess up and explain why this occurs, we’d all shut up.

Are x50v problems common?

In reading this site you could well be forgiven in concluding the x50v is a disaster-prone pda! I was in the same boat last month as you are now - trying to decide what pda, & indeed, what operating system, should replace my old Visor Platinum. I was going to buy a Zire 72, but the atrocious, peeling, blue paint job they chose, put me off (Palm has since changed it to a silver).

I was in Best Buy looking at their pda display, when some anonymous chap walked past and volunteered "Buy a Del". I didn't even know Del made pdas. I couldn't get to engage him conversation, but I did follow up and googled until I found this site. Well there seemed to be dozens of issues with the x50v, which seemed odd considering it was so (to me) expensive. Even some reviews questioned the VGA color - wasn't it poor in green, pale, surpassed with this & that competitors' screens, albeit these competitors were even more expensive. I even had my own questions on how good the search functions were, compared with the Palm OS 'find' function, which I used majorly with my Platinum. Long story short, after considerable research I opted to buy an x50v. I have had it about 2 weeks and I am extactic. Its VGA screen is awesome. Is it poor in green? - no, what doesn't help, however, is the washed out green color Windows chose for their wallpaper. All my photos look as good as photographic prints, with excellent, exceedingly bright, color rendition. Nothing has gone wrong with any of the functions, so far, and I would recommend it to anyone.
My concern for searching is gone. One just learns which fields are searchable in Windows and ensures the required searchable info is in those fields.

I am so glad now that Palm did not have the silver Zire 72 out in the first place - I would have fallen for it and have that instead of my x50v now. The x50v doesn't take pictures, at least not out of the box. But you can purchase SD or CF based camera accessories that slot into the x50v. - Something I'll do in due course, but I have to get used to my Bluetooth keyboard first. (Also, the wife might carp at me investing in any more pda related stuff right now!)
In all, my happy advice to all who visit the axim site is that folk who have problems are attracted to this site for obvious reasons. Folk who are perfectly happy with their pdas are less likely to visit and even less likely again to bother to post rather uninteresting messages on how great their purchases were - I'm clearly an exception here!

Hope this helps you in making your decision! By the way I envy your 20% discount coupon, but I did just manage to squeek in on the last day of Del's 15% off.

My question: Is everyone generally disappointed with the x50v or am I hearing of problems only from the vocal minority?

I am happy

I bought an X5 advanced when they first came out and it is still going strong two years later and I keep it handy as a backup for my x50v. Having worked with computers and electronics for the last twenty five years I am amazed that my PC turns on at all some times. When you think about the millions of transistors working under the cases and covers it boggles the brain. You are seeing the people here who have problems and are looking for answers and some people stick around after just to show our PPC's. If my ax dies tomorrow I will happily get another. I am more scared the MS activesync will not work than my PPC.

My opinion of the Axim x50v is that it is a fairly good example of how Windows 3.0 worked for us way back when. It was always needing to be rebooted and this is necessary with the x50v PDA.

So folks if you like hacking around with Windows 3.0 again lets have fun. I do like to hack around to have fun sometimes but sometimes is does go to extremes. It is a puzzle to have it working right, but it does sometimes work right. I enjoy the remote Wifi internet stuff, but Bluetooth is not where to be found on my x50v as far as I am concerned. It just does not work. And I have no clue as to how to get it to work.

I get the errors on starting BT all the time. I also get that card error as well. I just figure it is a function of the OS more than anything else. Dell is really hurting themselves with this type of product. I also feel we are more beta testing Dell products than actually using them with the x50v. Maybe the next version will be a working model instead of a hackers dream.
