Well reporting back. I received the new Axim today and so far all seems well. Setting it up right now, so I'll give another update in a few days. BTW, A04 hardware.

Hi,
I've also had a few problems with alignment although it's currently working ok for now, the heat thing seems likely as it's usually after i've been using it typing messages on MSN when it messes up for me.
Also, any ideas why the changes on version numbers? Bit concerned that my A01 arrived in March and yet it's now A04... seems to be changing each week.
Just seems strange!

I've had quite a few problems with screen alignment. I discovered a few things that helped. Anyone want to add a few. We can make this the "screen alignment tips thread."
1. Take the time to apply screen protection without any edges touching the axim case.
2. "Read Carefully" Take the time to apply screen protection without any edges touching the axim case.
3. Try using soft taps when doing a screen alignment.
4.
5.
anymore?
Oh, don't use a 26ounce hammer as a temporary stylus. It just doesn't work very well.

Hi everyone, The A04 seems to be doing well. I haven't had to align the screen since I first turned it on. So all seems well so far.

Like many of you, after only a month or so of use, my x50v digitizer is whacked out.
Edit: Cleaning under the bezel with a post-in note (sticky material helps?) finally fixed it. Waiting for the problem to return... kind of hope it does, kind of hope it doesn't.
Started happening about a week ago. A quick re-alignment, and it was better. Now that doesn't fix it anymore. It gets stuck in the 'Align Screen' mode (after 10+ attempts). Used screen protectors since Day One. Currently have a Brando and I'm about to take it off.
Suggested solutions:- Run credit card around edge (under bezel) to clean out dust
- Press to right of power button to see if it helps
- (last resort) call Dell for a replacement

What hardware version do you have? I have a new unit coming from Dell, hopefully today, and I'm hoping it's A04. I really don't want to have to get a different PDA, but if the new hardware doesn't help I'm going to have to.

I'm not sure where to find the hardware version. Alongside my Service Tag No. there is an ID ref. A02. Is this the hardware version? If it is why should I receive a brand new unit with an old hardware version!!

Yep, that's the hardware version. I'm getting mine today sometime so I'll play with it and let everyone know if it holds up or not, and what version hardware it is.

Well, I got my "new" Axim. Did anyone else get a refurb sent to them as a replacement? If I'd of bought a refurb from Dell in the first place, I could understand that, but this won't fly. It'a A03 hardware and I'll be hopping on the chat here at work shortly to have them send me a new unit.
*EDIT*
Well, I guess it's policy that if something manages to make it past 21 days and then break, I get a refurb. Oh well, not that big of a deal I guess. I did ask the agent if they're aware of this problem as it seems a lot of people are experiencing it. She said they were aware and plan on releasing a patch to fix the problem. I'm not so sure a patch is going to do anything though, it seems like it's a hardware problem.
She had no idea how long it will be before the patch is released, but she was going to email me when it's released. Excuse me if I don't hold my breath.

My device was bought brand new in the last week, so why was the hardware version A02? What should I do to ensure that my replacement is the up-to-date hardware version?

Fixed self
After a week of playing with my new x50v, it had alignment problems during note taking at 1:30pm. Unit may be hot and messed up the digitizer. Gave up on the unit and turned it off. Turned it on again now at 10:38pm and it works fine. Digitizer fixed itself? Sometimes it would mess up again... then it works again.
okay, the unit has been on for 1 hour now (11:21pm) and NOW the digitizer is messed up again.
I am guessing that heat is the problem because when the unit was off, the screen had a chance to cool down. When things heated up again, the heart beat at the top of the screen began. I think x50v isn't the problem. I previously owned a touch screen (liliput touchscreen) and the digitizer for that one also messed up due to heat in the car.
The only heat my x50v faced was the heat from inside my pant pockets and the lcd itself.
I pressed the right area next to the power button and TA DA! it works now! weird... is there a connection right there? The area seems loose, pressed it and no more digitizer problems.

I found how to recreate the alignment problem
I started noticing screen alignment problems on my new Axim X50v revision A02 and searching Google it lead me to this thread.
I think I found a way to consistently recreate the aligment problems. If I power down my PDA and then rub the screen GENTLY with a cloth (simulating what would happen if I kept the PDA in my pocket while walking), as soon as I start it, the top part of the screen is reacting 5 milimeters below the touching point. :realmad:
The bottom area of the screen seems to be better and is almost acceptable.
Can anybody confirm this behavior?

mendark,
I can confirm that behavior. Although my replacement seems to do it even when I carry it in my case in my backpack. I get the heartbeat on notes and it's off. It does seem like it does it a little more on the top of the screen than the bottom.
If the new A03 rom doesn't fix it, I'm gonna have to get a different PPC. I don't think it will, since it seems like a hardware problem, not a ROM fix. I can't waste half my time on my Axim closing programs I didn't mean to open, it's practically useless this way.

I received my new Axim on wednesday of this week; the screen started giving problems right off the bat. When I looked at the screen from an oblique angle, I could definitely see it bulge out a bit towards the bottom left corner. I could also feel this lump with my finger. While the alignment display at first appeared to be completely non-response, I found I could get the cursor to move by running the stylus along the left edge of the screen near the bezel. After a short period of time, I also saw prompts for memory errors and 'volume' widget appeared on the screen and wouldn't go away regardless of which button I pressed.
I used Dell chat last night and they're in the process of sending a replacement (expected to arrive in 3-5 business days -- they said they wouldn't overnight it). I think I might have been better off calling up; the chat still took a while to do, and there was definitely something lost in the translation -- it was almost as if a 'bot' were talking to me instead of an individual:
me : my screen is not responding
Dell : I see, could you tell me what the problem is?
me : I've done a soft reset and a hard reset and the problem still exists
Dell : first I'm going to have you do a soft reset, and then a hard reset.
:rolling:
edited : Dell service actually did overnight the product ...
