The first day I got my new AXIM X50V I had the problems you mentioned. I spent more time hard resetting the PDA, by removing the battery and reinstalling it. I told them they better send me a new working PDA, or I would be sending this back and getting my money back. THey sent me a working PDA, and other than my active sync issues, all works well.

axim x50v. Computer would state that a usb device connected to the computer had malfunctioned. I would dock and re-dock the pda 10-20 times before I was able to sync. Went like this for about a week and now it's working fine. Don't know whether to be happy or frustrated.

I received 2 X50v's for myself and my wife around March 2005. I am unable to connect to my computer with the either cradle. So i'm guessing both have blown USB's. When I try to connect Ative sync starts its light and sound show but no connection and yes my PC did reboot at one time when I connected the Axim to the cradle.

Now that I've read this post, I'm a bit worried. I just ordered the x50v and should arrive by next week. What would be the best way of circumventing the possibility of "frying" the USB port? Thanks for any advice given!

My impression (from following this, and other, threads) is that there are many differences in USBs on different PCs. So a conservative approach to connecting your Axim might be this: (1) do not connect the Axim to the PC unless the Axim is in its cradle, receiving AC power; otherwise, the Axim tries to recharge its battery from the USB connection, and it may be trying to draw too much (for your USB). And (2), don't connect the Axim to a USB connector on a hub, because that may not be as reliable a connection as ActiveSync will need.
Oh! And do regular backups. Just in case.
Fortunately, I don't speak from experience in these particular issues, because my Axim and my PC have been really happy with each other from the beginning. (And I have been thrilled with my Axim from the beginning. What a wonderful invention!)
Let us know how things go, O greatwiseone!

my x50v spontaneously starts up when powered off in the cradle after 10 minutes. when it stops, i have trouble getting it to power on and connect to the computer. i have to plug into various usb ports on my computer to get it to work. it's really strange. it's like my usb is frozen. i just got the x50v, maybe i don't know how to power it off properly. i'm just pressing the power button, i have no idea what it starts up after 5-10 minute. i have no idea how to keep it off without pulling out the usb. i think i'm going to switch to syncing with the WLAN. anyone know why there's this problem?

Pressing the power button is certainly the way to turn the Axim off. I think it would start up on its own if you have some "event notification" set. Check the manual under "Notifications". Or maybe some running program wakes the Axim up. Try exiting all programs before turning the Axim off. (The "X" in the top right corner means "Shrink" or "Hide" in Windows Mobile 2003SE, and not, as you would expect, "Close". You gotta hand it to Microsoft: they certainly have a sense of humor, eh?) Go to "Start > Settings", tap "System > Memory > Running Programs" and then "Stop All".

Just got my Axim X50V & GPS package last night and all is charged the full 8 hours+. I know from reading the "issues" that everyone has faced that it's a crap shoot when you have to hook directly to your PC. Do we have a "safe" combo that has a higher percentage of not blowing up computer? This is what I have:
Cradle
USB Powered Hub(4-port powered D-Link)
So - do I dock the Axim in the cradle with the AC power hooked-up - then connect the USB to the PC or rout through the powered hub? OR - should I shut the PC down 1st hook everthing up as described above and then power the PC up?
I have to hook it up to install the GPS the 1st time for active synch. I do have a card reader but it says you have to connnect via usb the 1st time.
Any and all input would be great!!

Personally, I favor this order: (1) giving power to the cradle & to the PC, (2) putting the Axim in the cradle, (3) turning the Axim on, (4) attaching the USB cable to a USB connector directly on the PC (not a hub). ActiveSync should start up. If that works fine for a month or so, then also try connecting the USB to a (powered) hub and see if everybody is happy.
Please let us know in any case what you do & what happens.

Just to give an update and some info:
Axim X50v ver. A09
Cradle: A02
Plugged power adapter into cradle, put Axim into cradle, plugged USB directly into USB on an Inspiron 6000D - no hub - everything sync'd fine - no issues so far. The laptop was running, the Axim was off.
Will update again when I try it again. Right now I'm only using it for GPS. I tried to install ActiveSync on my PC and it would not install - called Dell - they could not help and it was a Dimension 4700 desktop :). So - the only info I have is attaching it to my laptop.
