The cradle definately did something wacky to my old Athlon 700 which has an Asus K7M Motherboard. One of the first ones made. I now use the cradle no problem in my Dual Athlon Asus A7M-266-D, however it is plugged into a USB 2.0 PCI card, not an onboard USB port. This may be the difference.

Only happened once to me. Plugged in the axim, pc rebooted. Not a PC guru but it looked like the BIOS had reset to its default settings. Now everything autodetects on boot up (it did not before). The clock and date was also lost like the MB had lost power. Seems to be running ok now. No permanent damage done. I now try to dock the axim before powering up the PC.

My cradle goes through a powered USB hub so maybe this saved me.

I fried two motherboards on my HPdesktop at work. When I called Dell, they didn't even say that there was a problem

Two days ago without any cause my Office XP suite wanted to redo the activation because of some major hardware change, after that most of my programs didn't work anymore and almost all of the programfiles were just gone (system restore?) - a day after the reinstallation same thing. I never related it to my new (2 weeks old) Axim x50, but now I'm beginning to think I should? I will pay attention to see if it happens when I put it in the cradle...

Got the x50v in january. Pluged the power cable into the cradle and the the ac end into the wall. The pda was not in the cradle.I the pluged the usb cable into a usb hub. Computer froze no mouse movement etc. Hit the power button to reboot the computer, it no longer works. Tried several boot disc, no good. The computer is no more.

exact conditions
I'm happily able to say that I've not had to deal with any problems regarding the cradle, I have an x50v, but as I've read through the forum I've noticed that noone indicates whether they have both the usb and ac adapter plugged in or if they're simply using the usb to charge their axim. I'm using both the ac and usb (plugged directly into the motherboard - Gigabyte GA-7VAXP) and have never had a problem.

Laptop crash - PPC received in February
I had my cradle connected to my IBM laptop at work and have been successfully docking/undocking the Axim. However, yesterday when I docked it the whole laptop froze and went to a blank screen. The on/off button didn't work and neither did ctrl/alt/del. I had to take the battery out of the laptop and then reposition it. After that it started ok as did the Axim. I have only had the Axim this week so my experience of this is fairly limited. What do people recommend for docking/undocking- does it matter if the Axim is on/off, thanks

Hey all,

I have ordered and am waiting for my x50v to get here, but it seems that there are all sorts of electricity problems with this handheld starting from mobile charging problems to this surge stuff on select cradles.

Because I am not rich enough to buy another 2 motherboards!!! I went to my local computer store and the solution that would protect the computer was a universal power supply/surge protector coupled with an USB port hub powered by electicity. I thought that the $40 spent now would just be smarter than the $200 board (and since mine is old and not in production any longer the board must come with lots of other upgrades, too)

Does that combination sound like it would protect the computer to any of you who know way more than I?

thanks

Seems that my first bad experience (notebook started practically to re-install itself) was just a bad coincedence. Haven't had any problems anymore... (I tried connecting directly to laptop USB and I used a hub as well, neither give me problems). By the way: I recieved my Axim at the very beginning of febr.

Sorry folks - I can't edit the poll to include February. However, as of this point, there are 200 respondents and the baserate of the problem has stayed between 13-16% throughout the poll. Seems to me that is a pretty significant problem. Those individuals who experience problems should call Dell, tell them that the problem has most definitely been reported, and demand that some action be taken to rectify the problem. I was told that Dell would not pay back customers for burned motherboards but might reimburse in terms of hardware. That is as far as I got as the CS manager has managed to successfully duck my calls. If you folks are interested, I can put together a new poll covering February through April so as to keep tracking the problem. It most definitely does not appear to be limited to an early faulty batch of cradles.

Andy,

no I didn't. Is this info stored on the laptop (where ?), could I look at it retrospectively. Thanks

Shrink,

for the sake of the poll data being correct, I posted my failure in the January field even though I received my Axim in February.

Ok assuming you have a windows xp laptop. I know it works with pro but think it does with home as well.
Right click on My computer and select manage. Then open event viewer. The Application and system logs are the ones to look for. If your computer had enough time before it crashed it may have written something there.

Andy
