To determine whether or not a bad batch of cradles was released which has now been rectified, or whether the problem is onging, I am creating this poll.

The poll is simple: in what month did you receive your Axim X50; and did plugging your Axim into it either cause your computer to reboot spontaneously more than once or actually result in your usb port no longer being functional?

Please make sure that you are answering this question based on experience with the cradle alone. The synch cable has not yet appeared to be associated with this problem (and is therefore the safest solution if you are unsure about your cradle)

I would really appreciate it if everyone responded to this. Thanks! I'd also appreciate it if this post could get a temporary sticky. Thanks again!

HI,

I exprienced a spontaneous reboot on Monday. My axim was in the cradle, and on. Using the Axim, I deleted a game program from the SD card when the desktop PC rebooted.

Ok so far, but worried

I got my Axim x50v April 15, 2005. I have been using it with an Inspiron 2650 which is very much out of warranty. My two USB ports are ok so far, I just tested them with a usb flash drive. I think from now on I will see if I can sync the Axim through an ad-hoc WI-FI connection with my laptop. Failing that, perhaps buy the sync cable or at least not have the cradle connected to the AC power when hooked up to the laptop. My unit maybe ok, but how can I know for sure?

Did you check your system error logs? Driver issues (for example) can cause spontanous reboots on xp systems

I have had this problem... From x50v from March!

I have had this problem too. Not only did it frie/reboot my laptop. But now my laptop frequently reboots or freezes. When this happens the fans start up full blast, and I smelt something burning, only to find that the back of my laptop where the AC Adaptor plugs in actually started melting the plastic on my laptop. WTH, this only happens now once in a while when I am syncing with the USB. Now I sync via infrared. But wth is with this. I thought it was coincidence, but now that I have seen this thread...

Maybe the co-incidence is that you have seen this thread

Usb Cradel Of Death

So far so good. I have not blown up my computer, usb ports or caused global thermal nuclear destruction. But the weekend is still early. By the way I have not been pluging and unpluging the usb connector.

Well, I just got my Axim on Friday 5/6/2005 and I will be getting a new motherboard for my Inspiron 5150. The notebook started giving me funky USB errors, like unknown hardware and such. I rebooted the computer and now the USB ports don't work. No Activesync, no thumb drive, no USB floppy drive.

I've tried the usual Windows remove devices routine to no avail. the Dell diags show no problem, but nothing USB will work. I can sync wirelessly so I don't think it's Activesync.

I even went so far as to restore my system to an earlier system restore point, to no avail.

Spent a few hours with Dell tech chat and they have dispatched a new mobo. Unfortunately, I didn't know what caused the failure until I read this.

Grrrrr. This really sucks.

Having heard of this problem before getting my axim50v in march--I took to not plugging in the ac but just USB but not both at the same time.

I got my x50 in January and started cradling it on my office Dell Optiplex desktop. The Optiplex worked fine, but the x50 was extremely flakey. However, in March my Optiplex motherboard died, and our IT guys took it away. Shortly thereafter they called and asked if I’d been hotswapping a pda. Apparently, that’s their first suspicion when the motherboard USB circuits burn out – they told me it’s a “known” problem with Optiplex motherboards. They didn’t ask me what sort of pda I had. They recommended that if I insisted on cradling to the Dell, to do it through a usb hub. However, by this time I was cradling through a hub to my home PC (which is not a Dell), and the x50 has worked perfectly since then. I don’t know if the cure is from using a hub or from not using a Dell PC. But I do know I'm not going to cradle to the Optiplex system anymore!

Just to add a little bit of confirmation, I just finished swapping out the motherboard in my Inspiron notebook (they just sent me the part since I'm DCSE certified) I booted her up, ran the diags which again checked out fine and then rebooted into windows.

No problems whatsoever. My USB thumbdrives, my USB floppy drive, and my USB wireless mouse are all working flawlessly. I don't think I'll be installing the Axim cradle on another computer anytime soon. Since it was the only device plugged into the USB port when it blew, I think it's reasonably safe to say that it was responsible. If only Dell were as responsible. My guess is that they have no fix for the issue to offer at the moment and that's why they're refusing to admit there's an issue.

I just spent two hours fixing my printer. I would not print pictures but it did fine on text. I do not know if this is related or not but my printer is hooked to the usb port next to the one I had the axim in.

My first error msg was that my printer was not recognizing the usb connection. After running through all the trouble shooting tips and unplugging and replugging my printer (I unplugged the cradle).

It still said there was some kind of connection problem--I fiddled with the cords and configured the printer again and now it works.
Who knows--the printer is over 3 yrs old (Epson).

I guees i wait and see if it happens again. It is obvious it did not fry it or the port would not work at all--so I do not know if it is related but a USB hub is a good idea.

I see that Tripp Lite makes a USB surge protector. I always prefer APC for things like that but they don't seem to offer one. I wonder if plugging one of those inline with the cradle will fix this issue. Anybody tried one?
