Question Changing Language...

Hello,

I would buy a x50v on expansys. So it will be an UK version.

I would know if it possible to change the language with an ROM update to french.
On my old Axim x5 I was able to change language when I flash the ROM with a Compact Flash Card an the bootloader.

So, Is there any way to do this on the x50v?

Thanks for any answer,
Nicographx

On my X5 I was able to change the language with the ROM update using a compact flash and the bootloader...
I will find the bootloader on the x50v to do the same...
I know that if I make an update via ActiveSync, He refuses the rom because the language changes.

So the only way is the bootloader... :(

When I had my iPaq 1940, I wanted to change it from German to English, Ted Whitely gave me the following instructions on www.ipaqhq.com:

"(...)
HP will tell you changing the language ROM poses a problem with OS licensing. Here is a process you can use if you feel you want to go through with changing the OS language.

*DISCLAIMER*
This process will avoid your warranty. Also proceed with caution. It is not 100% guaranteed and you at your own risk.

You need an Hexadecimal editor (example UltraEdit-32)

1) Download the english version of the image ROM from HP is it is available. This ROM should be for your particular model.

2) Run the .exe file. Extract all the files and cancel the operation.

2b) If you have Pocket PC 2003 upgrade CD (depending on your model):
- Run the upgrade process until the Licence Requirements window appears (don't cancel the step)
- The upgrade files are extracting automatically in the directory C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Local Settings\Temp\pft##.tmp
- Copy all the file in another directory
- Then return to the Licence Requirements windows and cancel the operation

3) Go to your directory and make a copy to the file KERNEL*.nbf (the name of the copy file most NOT start with "KERNEL")

4) Edit the original KERNEL*.nbf with your hexadecimal editor. Change the first lines: ENGLISH to SPANISH and ENG to SPA, save the file and quit the editor. This is an example of changing from English to Spanish.

5) Execute the RUU.exe

6) In the Welcome to the ROM Update Utility for the iPAQ Pocket PC select the checkbox and press Next

7) In the next windows Follow the instructions below to prepare the iPAQ Pocket PC for the update process and press Next

8) In the Current information about your iPAQ Pocket PC windows press update.

9) In the next window you pass the validation of the language of your ipaq. In this step, go to your directory, rename the original KERNEL*.nbf (the name file must NOT start with "KERNEL"). Then rename the copy of the original file with the original KERNEL*.nbf name

10) Return to the upgrade window and continue the process..."

Maybe this can also be applied for the Axim?

Anyone willing to tell me what a bootloader is? How can you use it? I've been told that it has to do with updating ROM in another language, but how?

Anyone feeling like answering, or is it really that difficult to use? I really would like to turn my Italian Axim x50 into an English speaking one :)
