How long do you have the battery removed? There is supposed to be a 'backup battery' in the unit that will hold your settings for about 30 minutes. If you have your battery out for very long, I'm told that you get a hard reset like that.

I had the same exact problem, but my battery was at 97%. The unit shut down and then when I restarted it, the message was there to press the envelope button. After pressing it I lost all of my data (hard reset). I called Dell yesterday and they said I should have a replacement by Tomorrow.

Happened to me too (2X) and wiped out a database before I had the opportunity to back it up. I get "There has been a memory error message ..." after replacing the battery. If is happens again, I will call Dell.

Anyone also have trouble getting their x50v to recognize a new fully-charged battery? A couple of times I have replaced a low battery only to turn the x50v back on and still have a low battery warning. I then have to go back, pull the battery out and re-insert it. This is when the hard reset has occurred each time.

I had that happen this morning. My battery was at 28% last night when I went to bed. I didn't have any scheduled alarms or anything that I can think of that should have drained the battery fully, but when I woke up, my Axim was totally dead. I pushed the power button...nothing. I hit soft reset...nothing. After hitting soft reset about 5 times, the Dell splash screen came on and it had hard reset with no warning! Good thing I already have a replacement on the way for this one because of a faulty digitizer...whew!

if you turned it off without disabling wifi then it will kill the battery when it does its midnight turrn on routine. if wifi was on it won't turn off no matter what you have the auto turnoff set to.

I dont have such problem so far for my x50v. My batt was 40% and replaced it to a new extended batt for charging. After fully charged, I removed the extended batt and replaced with the standard one which was 40% full. At least 30 seconds during the replacement.

I'm wondering if the loss of power to the backup causes some kind of reset. I can see the backup battery as a "conduit" to the system, maybe while it is charging no power gets to the system memory?
I left mine out of the cradle and then played music for a while to fully discharge the Axim and then planned to recharge it. After replacing the main battery with a fully charged one and putting it in the cradle, I got the "memory error" message. After charging for a while it would turn on but required a hard reset. After a few minutes the backup battery said "Normal" power and everything works fine. So I restored everything.
Perhaps the backup battery is sitting between the main battery and system memory.

in my previous model this also occurred, the correct age to remove the main battery, as it says in the manual... The battery would second, without the main one can more than last 30 minutes, is for that it serves, to keep the main rejection of contact.
my friends also have its, but with 1 year of use, them they had never removed the main battery, and therefore the model of them do a Hard reset, exactly with new battery backup...

It sounds like you need to reinstall your software one ap at a time to get to the root of which one is causing you to experience a conflict. It sounds like the problem isn't so much that you have a defective Axim, but that you have a software/hardware incompatibility issue.
