I have tried upgrading my X50 mid using the R92018.exe file and the newer R92748.exe file. The same problem occurs with both files. The blue text is what my Axim displays and red text is what is displayed on my desktop. The following is what happens:

I am able to backup my old rom and am able to click on the next button that is
supposed to proceed with the upgrade. A progress screen appears on my desktop
computer. At the point that the progress screen appears I also notice the green
ActiveSync icon in the tray goes from green to grayed out. Then, the following
messages appear on my Axim screen. (Note: This text appears on the Axim screen
AFTER the ActiveSync icon turns from green to gray, indicating the connection
has been lost)

"Waiting on USB to be ready"

next

"Handshaking with PC..."

then at the top of the Axim screen, above the previous message it says:

"RUU image update"

At that point things seem to freeze up and stop. After a couple of minutes my
DESKTOP displays this message:

"The procedure CANNOT proceed due to the following reason:"

"The connection between the computer and the device cannot be
detected"

"Ensure that the USB cradle/cable is connected correctly and try
again"

I have tried doing this upgrade with both my original X50 mid and a replacement. I
have also tried it using three different computers, one of which is a Dell
Latitude Cpi notebook. I have tried it using the USB cradle and the travel sync
cable. My home desktop computer seem to get a little further in the process
than the other two but does not complete the upgrade. My desktop is running
Windows XP. The laptop and the other desktop are running Windows 98SE.

Can anyone who is also having this problem see anything that looks similar to their situation? I have disabled Anti-virus and diconnected from my network. I am connecting directly to the USB port and am not using a hub. Tech support at Dell is of no help and they thought a replacement would work. Any ideas?
Since the same problem occurs on 3 different computers, the causes could be:

a. Defective cradle
b Sofware problems (any same software installed on all 3?, tried different version of Activesync?)

Make sure that there is a Guest partnership, and if you still get the error msg, perform soft reset on the axim or if its in the cradle , take it out and put it back in.

Does the update use activesync or does the update software create its own conection (terminal conection maybe?) if it does try removing activesync from you pc and just running the update software on its own. I may be wrong on this but it shouldnt hurt to try. Good luck

LHBALESJR, when your Axim is powered on and connected via USB, can you go to the USB section under Device Manager, find the USB Root Hub your Axim is connected to, go to Properties, Power tab, and check to see if your port is providing a full 2 mA of current to the device. Also, check the status of the Root Hub in other tabs to see if there's any errors, device conflicts, etc. Let us know what you find out.

Administrator Priveleges required

When I tried to install the 1/20/05 ROM upgrade, I discovered that I could not install it from my PC at work (where I do not have administrator privileges - WinXP Pro). There I got the same kinds of messages mentioned in this discussion. With my x50v, I purchased lifetime support, so I called Dell who told me I had to install it from a PC on which I had administrator privileges. So I installed it at home. Installation went flawlessly there (WinXP Home w/ USB2.0), but, of course, I had to set both my sync partnerships up again.

I tried this with a guest partnership but the same thing happened. I also removed it from the cradle and replaced it but still no update. I also preformed a soft reset but the results are still the same. You actually can't do a soft reset because at the point where the update stops working is after the rom update program has already cleared the memory.

Geez, not too many options left. LHBALESJR, you mentioned earlier that three of the computers you tried are USB 1.1. Although Don't Panic! and probably many others have sucessfully upgraded with USB 1.1, I suspect we're dealing with incompatible USB chipsets. I encourage you to try activesyncing and upgrading with other computers (preferrably newer ones with USB 2.0). Can you use a friends computer or perhaps someone in your family? If all else fails, contact Dell and arrange a replacement.

Which version of ActiveSync are you using ? I had this problem with 3.8 and I went to another computer using 3.7.1. Then it's OK.

I forgot to mention that I have tried it with both version 3.7.1 and 3.8 of ActiveSync. I have contacted Dell support and one of the technicians is checking it out. He is also monitoring this thread and has posted something for me to try. Unfortunately it did not work either. Someone mentioned earlier that it might be my cradle but I also tried it with the Dell travel sync cradle. Since I have tried it on two different X50s it seems unlikely to be a defect with the X50. Victorypoint may be right with regards to the incompatable USB chipset on the computers I've been trying it on. It does seem unusual that the update failed on three different computers. (one Compaq desktop, one Dell notebook and my home computer which is an AMD duron 1.2GHz with a SIS chipset) Maybe the update program Dell is using is very particular with regards to the USB connection. All of these computers meet any requirements listed on Dell's site as far as being able to use it with the Axim. My desktop is the only one running Windows XP so I only tried the latest rom update on it. This has been a very frustrating experience BUT this is how you learn to solve problems or at least learn where to look for answers. By the way, I do appreciate everyone's input! :)

I was afraid to try the upgrade but finally did. If you can't do it, no biggie. It might be ever so slightly faster and the touch screen might be ever so slightly more sensitive but, honestly, the difference is nearly imperceptible. It's hardly worth worrying about.
