I have seen scatered posts regarding this issue but I hope we can find something in common and find out why this won't work.
I have tried upgrading my X50 mid using the R92018.exe file and the newer R92748.exe file. The same problem occurs with both files. The blue text is what my Axim displays and red text is what is displayed on my desktop. The following is what happens:
I am able to backup my old rom and am able to click on the next button that is
supposed to proceed with the upgrade. A progress screen appears on my desktop
computer. At the point that the progress screen appears I also notice the green
ActiveSync icon in the tray goes from green to grayed out. Then, the following
messages appear on my Axim screen. (Note: This text appears on the Axim screen
AFTER the ActiveSync icon turns from green to gray, indicating the connection
has been lost)
"Waiting on USB to be ready"
next
"Handshaking with PC..."
then at the top of the Axim screen, above the previous message it says:
"RUU image update"
At that point things seem to freeze up and stop. After a couple of minutes my
DESKTOP displays this message:
"The procedure CANNOT proceed due to the following reason:"
"The connection between the computer and the device cannot be
detected"
"Ensure that the USB cradle/cable is connected correctly and try
again"
I have tried doing this upgrade with both my original X50 mid and a replacement. I
have also tried it using three different computers, one of which is a Dell
Latitude Cpi notebook. I have tried it using the USB cradle and the travel sync
cable. My home desktop computer seem to get a little further in the process
than the other two but does not complete the upgrade. My desktop is running
Windows XP. The laptop and the other desktop are running Windows 98SE.
Can anyone who is also having this problem see anything that looks similar to their situation? I have disabled Anti-virus and diconnected from my network. I am connecting directly to the USB port and am not using a hub. Tech support at Dell is of no help and they thought a replacement would work. Any ideas?
From what I can gather, the ROM upgrade likes newer computers supporting USB 2.0. Can you provide any USB specs for the 3 computers you tried? The Latitude CPi is an older laptop so it may only have USB 1.0/1.1 ports.
I had about the same problem. I went through two versions (Jan and Feb) and it disconnected me when it was ready to load the new version. I have Windows 2000 on this computer. I am going to try it on my other which has XP. Maybe that will work.
The update did not work on my own computer custom built win xp top of the line, it only worked on my girlfriend's computer which is a win2k old hunk of junk Compaq. I have a strong feeling users like me who built their own computers will experience more problems.
Mine worked just fine on a very highly customized & modded OC'd Asus P4C800E with a 1gHz FSB with Vmods. No problems. Could be chipsets, maybe, this uses the Intel 875.

All three of the computers I tried are USB 1.1. I had hoped that this wasn't the issue but I'm afraid you may be right. I guess I could buy a USB 2.0 card and install it but other than needing it for this, I really don't have any other device that needs USB 2.0. Maybe I can use my brother computer for a few minutes and try the upgrade on it.
Since you brought this up I guess I should ask if there is anyone out there who has not been able to upgrade who DID have a USB 2.0 port. I noticed that the latest ROM file I downloaded mentions Windows XP and I think Windows 2000 but it may not even work with Windows 98SE. I fairly sure that 98 was not on the list. I don't remember anything about a requirement for USB 2.0. It only seems to be using ActiveSync at the beginning of the upgrade process. Once it starts to update the file I noticed that the ActiveSync icon turns gray and then closes. Maybe it has something to do with it communicating directly with the Axim instead of through ActiveSync.
Maybe USB 1.1 is the problem. If not, we can continue to eliminate the possibilities until we find the problem. I noticed that the site Dell directed me to was called TinyURL.com. I wonder who's site this is?
No my IBM Thinkpad with Windows 2000 Professional OS at work was USB 1.1. I had no problems. Did I miss which OS you're using?

Well, so much for the USB 2.0 theory. Here's another theory -- maybe the USB port can't deliver enough juice to properly maintain a connection with the cradle? Have you disabled USB power management? A USB hub should be able to supply a maximum of 5 volts at 1/2 amp to each port. I would check under the USB Power tab in USB Root Hub, Device Manager, to see how much power each port is using. Maybe the cradle needs a specific amperage that your USB hub can't deliver? I'm totally speculating here.
Hi folks - I had the exactly the same problem as LHBALESJR. But someone in another thread mentioned switching off BOTH anti-virus and the anti-hacker/firewall. I use Kaspersky Labs AV/AH, and as soon as I diabled them the upgrade went perfectly. You could try that... Good luck

is there a process of putting the rom image on a sd or cf card and booting from that?
You are supposed to be able to put the image on an SD card (so the rumor goes)... and do a resetbutton/powerbutton/wirelessbutton combo keypress... which for me works maybe 1 try in 50. It then boots and says ROM update utility (or something like that), but for a while it was telling me no image found (no ROM update image), then with the updated A02 ROM update that came out last week, it switched to just filing (no harm done, but no upgrade either).
So I think the method is there, but for some reason its failing.
Yup, that's the first thing it will ask you before the process actually starts. Do you want to backup your ROM image?

I thought there was a copy of A01 on the Dell CD but its not there. I would think an A01 from one would work on another. I have a backup but the backup is over 32mb. I am still using a dialup connection but maybe someone here could upload it. I'm not sure what process is involved with downgrading but it may use the same procedure as the upgrade program except I would guess you would remove the A02 RIS file from the directory and put the old one instead. I'm just not sure.

I also disabled antivirus and have not set up a firewall but still no go. I'm going to check out the USB power settings mentioned in the other post.
