i think i have a guess at the root of the problem:

i noticed that one day i had less than 1/2 a megabyte free the next i had 2.5. i think that there is a problem with the free space reporting and that the BIS partition cant be seen by the OS once it has intruded on the OS partition. a hard reset wont help because it doesn't erase the BIS. it probabily just needs a low level format and a new rom but there is no way to do this.

just my opinion

Oh No!!! I just had the exact same thing happen to me. I went into Piocket Mechanic to format it after my battery had died and forced a hard reset. It wasnt' a choice. I thought this was wierd. Now I went into file explorer and it isn't there!

Does the Axim have any built in diagnostics?
Here is a similar problem and the solution for the Toshiba BIS.

dell has a (kind of unimpressive) diagnostic utility here:

My X50v has just lost its Built-In Storage too - AO3 ROM.

Phoned Dell - once they understood the problem, he said "I'm sending you a new replacement" - as if they are use to this sort of problem and know the proceedure...

Crap! Mine just disappeared too! I noticed that one of my programs wasn't syncing right this morning (ePocrates), and when I went to run it on the Axim to see what was up, it wasn't there! My entire BIS is gone/invisible/inaccessible.

This happened between last night and this morning. I didn't install any new programs or anything like that.

I just tried a hard reset and it's still gone. So then I used Sprite Backup to auto-restore. That ran fine (no errors), but the BIS is still missing.

Any other ideas? I really really hate to call Dell and send this back...

I tried everything I knew with no joy - reloading previous ROM (A01 and A02), upgrading to current ROM (A03), PocketMechanic, SK Tools, hard resets, etc.

As far as I can tell, there is no option other than call Dell - it would be certainly good to register that fact that yet another of their devices has failed. If they say this is the first time they have heard of the problem, tell them otherwise!

Well, it's done... After spending 45 minutes on Dell Chat with some guy who just could not understand what I was telling him (he kept sending me information on saving attachments to CF cards), I finally got on the phone. Even then the guy insisted that I was not using the device properly. Finally, after a hard reset, he had me try and back up the device to the BIS. When I told him that the BIS wasn't even an option in the backup utility, he finally agreed that I had a hardware problem, and a brand new replacement is on its way.

I just hope this doesn't happen again!

Well the saga continues. Arrived fresh in the mail today was... a refurbished unit. Not acceptable. Another 30 minutes on the phone and hopefully I'll have a working unit by the end of the week.

Has the disappearing BIS happened to anyone else out there, or is this (hopefully) a pretty rare event?

So dose anyone know for sure whats happening just before it dissaperes? Is it just keeping it close to full that would cause this? I was going to install pocket cmd, but if it is what caused Mben's problem, dont think im going to risk it...

My BIS was running with about 4-8 MB free space (cannot remember the exact value - and cannot check anymore...) prior to failing/disappearing.

I had just enable WIFI, launched Skype when it hung (installed in BIS). So I waited a few minutes to see if it would come back, then did a soft reset - when it came back, the BIS was gone (i.e. Wizbar II, installed in BIS, did not start).

Perhaps we should start a poll to find out how many BIS died, and what their state was prior to dying.

My BIS was nowhere near full. Here was my setup before the BIS disappeared:

Programs into Main Memory:
Spb Pocket Plus
Pocket Breeze
PocketWeather

Programs into Built In Storage:
MemMaid
Sprite Backup 3.1.4
Epocrates

It was working one night just fine, and the next morning was gone.

I did have Sprite set up to make a nightly backup at 3 AM, but that was supposed to be stored on my CF card.

Lost BIS on my X3i after uninstalling something there - fake hard reset restored it. Lost it on a week old X50v after deleting some mp3s from BIS - tried many things but none worked - had to get a new one from Dell.

Now I only use BIS for programs that I am pretty certain that I'll be keeping.
