My BIS disappeared as well, last Friday. Actually, it didn't dissappear, it renamed itself to built in storage 2, and then there was a folder name built in storage in my RAM. It all happened after a soft reset, and I got a notice saying it couldn't find such and such executables which were located in BIS. I thought I fixed it by deleting the built in storage folder (new one) and doing a soft reset. The BIS2 then renamed itself to BIS and everything seemed fine. Then I noticed that the screen alignment was horribly off. I tried a couple of more soft resets and then a hard reset, but nothing fixed it. I gave up and had Dell send out a replacement. Luckily, I had 30 days left on my 1 year warranty and complete care or I would have been SOL. This will be my third x50v, and I'm pretty worried that something is going to happen once the warranty expires. My plan for this new unit is to get it set up exactly how I want it, and then never make any software changes or apply any updates. Hopefully that will extend the life of the unit.

My BIS disappearded Christmas Eve. I was downloading a poodcast to my CF card and it hung. After waiting about 15 minutes thinking the server was busy, I did a soft reset and when it came back on, all of the program icons on my spb Pocket Plus tab were defaulted. Tap one and it said the program could not be found. Opened File Explorer since Resco Explorer was installed in BIS and path not found, I noticed the BIS was missing. After 9 attempts on Dell Chat I finally got someone who would replace the unit. I was running A04 and had not installed anything in several weeks. Unfortunately for me, I received several accessories for my Ax that I have not been able to really enjoy since I lost everything during the hard resets. The only bright side of this is that I am down to 23 days remaining on my warranty. At least it didn't happen after the warranty expired.

I had the same problem tonight. I had my activesync set to do a backup each time I docked the unit. My BIS was only using about 5.5MB of space. After reading several of your postings, I decided to take the plunge & do a hard reset. After I performed the rest, I went into Activesync & did a restore of the previous backup. Once that was done, I had to do a soft reset. When all was said & done, when I checked again, the BIS was restored. My unit is an X30H with the A06 ROM recently installed.I noticed that several people were mentioning the A02 ROM. I don't know if that makes any difference or not.

Lol, Looks like we all have the same problem......Mine disappeared a couple of times.
The first time I got it to come back by doing a hard rest and choosing cancel then whil e it was loading into the OS I pulled the battery. After I put the battery back in and turned it on it came back!!!!!! The first time :-( LOL, now nothing works and I live in Egypt where I am gonna have to find a way to fix this......
But I do have one noob question......
Do programs rely heavily on the Built in Storage as RAM?

BTW!!!! I had was running A03 and When I pulled the battery out and put it back in afterwards, started it up a message much like the message for whether you want to format ROM or not. It asks you to press the contacts button to fix the problem found in the Built in storage. It still says that on mine but now it does not fix the prob.

I found another solution to this problem.
My BIS disappeared about an hour ago after I installed a game (ScrabblCE), which I had installed and uninstalled before, so I'm not sure what the problem was.
Anyway, I did a soft reset, and when I came back my BIS was gone. I did a hard reset. No luck. I started and then canceled a hard reset. Nothing.
So I pulled out my WM 5.0 upgrade CD. I knew there was a reason I'd kept this thing around after deciding to stick with WM2003SE. The upgrade process reformats that BIS.
So I popped it in, and about 25 minutes later, my X50v was running WM 5.0. About 20 minutes after that, I was back to WM2003SE and my built in storage is back!
Right now I'm restoring my system from a daily backup I made with Spb Backup. I'm pretty sure I'll still have to reinstall a bunch of programs, because I had installed most of my programs to BIS previously. Won't be doing that again. But it's nice to know it's there in case I need it.
