Lexar SD card scrambled

What a drag. I was moving a movie (the Incredibles) off my 1 GB Lexar SD card (32x) and replacing it with another movie. (Ice Age) I was using an older model SansDisk card reader. Unfortunately, when it wrote the file onto my card, it did something, I know not what. Every file and folder was now unreadable on the card. Lots of little squares and squiggles, etc showing. Ouch. So I had to format the card and start a new reload of my games, music, pictures, and other files I had on the card. Fortunately, all the important stuff was on my BIS, so it was not a great disaster, just a pi@@ off, and a waste of time. I have read about some others having thier data scrambled before, but this is my first. From now on there will be a folder on my home PC with a copy of EVERYTHING on every card in my AX. (backed up reasonably often, hehehe)

your card probably just needs to be formatted. just stick it in the card reader, then go to my computer and right-click your card and click format. All of the info will be deleted from the card.

If memory serves correctly, some older Sandisk readers have occasional issues with large SD cards, particularly 1GB variants. Do a search here on Aximsite of "Sandisk SD reader" and see what you find.

I've only seen one other issue with Lexar cards (modern ones) since I joined in October 2004, so although I wouldn't be surprised to hear about one failed card, it would still be a new one for me. By the way...the other Lexar problem was actually a problem with the internal SD drive on the Axim.

I have found that when that happens, if you are using XP, you can put the card in a reader, go to a command prompt and type: "chkdsk (drive letter):/f"
replacing (drive letter) with the letter of whatever your scan disk card is. That will scan the card and fix any errors found. I have had this work a couple times with cards from both my Camera and my Axim.

an update... I tried the card reader with another SD card. 3 times out of 6, it locked up my computer when I tried to write to the SD card. So I am assuming this old reader I have has bit the dust. It is being trashed today, and I am buying a new one. Problem solved, I hope.
Thankfully there was no important info involved, mostly gaming stuff.

You can send the new one to me if you are really going to throw it away. I'll pay the $.37 postage.

Another way to fix it (little squares and squiggles, etc ) if your using a card reader and a Windows XP system is to right click on the drive letter in My Computer, then choose Properties, then choose Tools then click on Error Checking and that will fix you up.

I avoid this squiggle problem by giving my data an extra 20 or so seconds even when the card reader stops blinking or Windows reports Transfer Complete.

Thanks, DP, I will try that if it happens again. I had no idea what happened, just looked like gibberish.

Looks like the Lexar itself wasn't the problem, so the unbelievable performance of Lexar cards in Axims still stands. Good to know.
