I had tried the aborted hard reset thing before but it didn't work. However, I've just managed to restore most of my BIS with only about 4MB still taken up. I attempted to delete the directory called BIS on my axim and it gave me the busy icon for a few seconds before saying access was denied. But when I checked my memory, I had suddenly recovered about 42MB of the 46MB previously hidden!

I'll see if there's any way I can get access to the protected part via my pc. Otherwise I might just have to live with it. I really can't see how this is a hardware problem and I don't want a refurbished unit when I've only just been using mine for about 25 days.

Is the system still operating at full speed? One of the most obvious manifestations of the complete BIS loss (at least in my case) is a huge slowdown when resetting the unit (soft or hard), I assume because it's reading the OS in ROM.

If it's not having the slowdown issue, I suppose you could just continue on, 4Mb missing or not ... but if it were me I'd take the fully functional refurb over a compromised formerly new unit.

It seems to be operating at full speed. I will have to see how it goes after I've reloaded everything and backed it up (which I hadn't done last time because I didn't expect it to auto-reset itself). If it continues to auto-hard reset I will have to send it back, but I hope it was just a certain program which caused it which I won't use anymore. Hopefully I won't have the lost BIS problem anymore if I can restore most of it by attempting to delete the directory.

I think my problem might have had something to do with the Beta version of CalliGrapher. After a few hard resets, I installed the latest beta, and the problem seems to have stopped (touch wood).

got a refurbished unit, on saturday (monday now).. (now i have 2, as the courier was supposed to take the original but delivered when i wasnt home and just left it here)

same exact problem as with my orginal unit (BIS disappears)

AND

the "new" unit they sent me has an additional problem, the wifi LED doesnt work...

o fun, cant wait to get my next unit maybe the power button wont work either...

i dont have a problem getting the BIS to come back sooner or later, but that is not what i paid for, i would like a fully functioning unit ALL OF THE TIME, not just some of the time.

i still wonder if this problem is with all of the axims.....

Aaarg. Its still doing it!

Has anyone else had there BIS actually copied into a duplicate BIS 2?

The "Built in Storage" becomes empty, and a new directory called "Built in Storage 2" appears will all the orignal BIS's contents. This directory has an icon showing it to be a disk, not just a standard folder, and the normall BIS directory appears as a standard folder (no special icon). Nothing is lost, but shortcuts obviously dont work, and its ****ing annoying.

Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Would like to add that this problem is not just with Dell. I used to have a old Jornada 568. The NV built-in storage can disappear too !

Somebody recommended a way to solve this. It was to format the NV built-in storage. The person sent me an utility and it worked! But I lost the utility and the next time it disappear, I asked and asked again. Nobody seem to know of the utility anymore. I also asked HP and they said no such thing.

Sprite caused BIS to disappear

I installed Sprite Backup on my Axim x30 last night. I installed it into BIS. After my first backup, I noticed that BIS had disappeard. There is a Sprite FAQ on this. Start a hard reset by holding done the power button and reset switch, then press the hard reset cancel button. At first it did not seem to work, but after another soft reset and power on/off, BIS returned with all programs intact. Dell should have fixed this BIS thing long ago.

Well, it looks like my BIS just disappeared too. I was intalling WordBook dictionary to my SD card and it didn't work, so I tried putting it on the BIS. It didn't work there either, so I deleted the folder it created and ever since then, my entire BIS is gone.

I bought this unit two months ago and have taken great care of it. There isn't a scratch or a mark on it. I don't want to have it replaced with a refurbished unit simply because Dell can't produce a handheld that works all of the time.

Don't sweat the refurb. It's fine.

I noticed in an earlier post, someone suggested that perhaps changing the operating system would resurrect the BIS. Has anyone had a chance to confirm this? With WM2005 coming out next month, I'm thinking of hanging onto my Axim until then to try it out. And if that doesn't restore it, then I'd get it replaced.

I've read somewhere on this forum about solution for bis problem
they flashed axim with japanese rom - which I think has a defferent size than english rom and later reflashed with english rom - that should reformat bis!
I will look for that tread and post link here

Yeah old news, if you get it to work let us know. I plan to keep my warranty intact until it runs out.

Yeah, I'm a little wary of messing around with hex editors and other language ROMs. I think I'll wait a month until WM5, which should accomplish the same thing without warranty concern.
