x50v "BIS disappeared" problem solved

Maybe it will help some people. There is possibility to get BIS back using Kaician's way to change language in x50. Here is his thread: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=83668 .
I've just brought my BIS in x50v back... If you've lost your BIS you can try to change ROM to Japanese and then back to English. I downgraded ROM to A02EN and changed to A01JA with header from A03EN. After hard reset (it takes a long time because of ROM formatting. In my case it was 20 minutes!! Be patient)I changed ROM to A03EN with header from A02JA and voila! BIS is back. Be careful because you can brick your x50, and remember 2 facts: if something will go wrong you're out of warranty and your're doing it for your own responsibility. You can also try tool called psmformat. I haven't tried it but heard worked for a few people here in Poland. Good luck!

Or you can wait to a next ROM upgrade.... It happened to my X5 a long time ago I was investigating and I didn't get my BIS back till Dell released a new ROM upgrade .. if we could simply downgrade....anytime we want.. stupid Dell upgrade software!! :)

Yeah... you can wait but only for ROM with WMobile 5. Regular English 2003SE ROMs have the same size so during upgrading there is no BIS formatting, and it doesn't solve BIS problem. Three solutions: above mentioned with language switching, waiting for Windows Mobile 5 (in my opinion too long...), replacing a PDA at Dell.

This is good news, I assume the unit is back to 100% operation (particularly speed) once this is done?

Can you explain about the "header"?

Yes! It works with full speed, just like a new one. Header? I mean first 32 blocks (bytes) of a ROM. It's explained very well in the Kaician's thread (even with pictures): http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=83668

I know that PSMformat seems to work on the hp4700 which has a tendency to lose the BIS quite frequently. Here's some details:

Here's a link to PSMformat:

Should my BIS fail out of warranty in the future I will definitely try this out.

If you can get Axim replaced by Dell quickly it's better to not risk. But I bought my PDA in US and live in Poland... It means at least 1 month to get it replaced. I don't know why there are so many problems when one wants to transfer warranty to other country:(
