WiFi and WEP Keys

Hi!
I just got my X50 and so far I haven't been able to get WiFi to work. It tells me i have the wrong kind of WEP Key, and that a standard key should be about 5 characters. Can this be right?

The WEP key I am trying to use is alphanumeric and has about 20 characters. So far, this key has always worked without any problem when connecting laptops to my signal.

Thanks a lot,

Don

No, a WEP key will be 10 characters for 64 bit WEP or 26 characters for 128 bit WEP. It has to be EXACTLY those lengths if it's the hex key. A passphrase can deviate.

If it's asking for a 5 digit key it might want the key in ASCII?? Does you have the option of changing how the key is input (the format)?

.
.

WEP codes are sometimes "device dependent", especially when using ASCII passwords on devices from differing manufacturers. They use different algorithyms to code an ASCII password into HEX.

When using WEP Devices, it is best to not use passwords. Instead find one of your devices that will show you the HEX of your password, then use this HEX in all other devices.

Or you can just go HERE and create a HEX number to enter into all devices.

Thanks for your response!
Actually I'm sorry, it is definitely a 26 character WEP. When I enter it, i am told that to be a valid key, it must have 5 or 13 charaters. Any ideas?? I will ask my Internet provider about changing to a ASCII.

Nothing to do with your ISP.

Where exactly are you being asked to enter this?

In the Odyssey Client when trying to set up a new connection:
After it asks you about the association mode and EAP methods, you come to a screen with 4 blank fields for 4 keys. Should I not be getting this screen?

I don't use the Odyssey client I'm afraid, but on that page there should be a radio button or similar to change the format of the key.

If you can't find it, can you either take a screenshot of the page or just tell me what's written on there. Specifically you're looking for the word "hex" or "hexadecimal". But if that's not there, just tell me what is.

BTW - If you're just using WEP you don't have to use the Odyssey client at all. So another option is just to configure it through the WM2003 tools.

Yes there is a hexidecimal button. But I don't know how many characters it is expecting.

The only reason I'm using the Odyssey Client is cause that's what the "Quick" Set up guide advised to use! what a joke!
Is it easier doing it another way?

Oh- click that and you're good. Enter the hex key.

Close the Odyssey Client and soft reset first before you use the normal WLAN client.

Thanks for your help. Still no luck. I'm going to see with my Internet provider if there isn't another key I should be using.

Do you not configure your router?

Does it not accept the 26 character key?
