Mad Dead X50

Well, it looks like my ol X50 (mid) gave up the ghost. I used it last night, no problems or warning signs.

Turn it on this morning and I'm presented with some sort of error message stating a memory error has occured and press the contacts button to try to resolve the problem. Tried and failed. Tried hard resetting it and again presentd with a message stating that that I need to press contact button to erase everyhting (I assume to proceed with the hard reset.) No luck, still dead. Battry out, in, resets (soft and hard).

I called Dell and to be honest, I got through easy enough and they are sending me a replacement.

I have to say I have terrible luck with PDAs. They all seem to last me a year before a problem presents itself. I've had iPaqs and Palms, both seem to puke out. Well both did after the warranty expired at least this one was still in warranty.

I'm not hard on it, I do use it every day, but overall I don't stress the machine.

Oh well, now I have to wait for a replacement.

I just figured I'd whine a bit

have you tried charging the battery directly in the craddle?

Why would charging the battery remove the error message? The battery was at near capacity Friday anyways, I think it was around 97% when I turned if off for the final time that night and Saturday morning I tried turning it on and got that error message.

Update
After varialflip suggestions, I swapped the battery out with my high capacity one and it booted up - I'm confused

Anyways not sure what to do now, Dell is sending me a new(refurb) unit.

don't diss my suggestions too quickly ;) it happened to me once. i think it's a software alarm error that drained the battery when you weren't watching. (for me, it was because of remotely active synching all night!)

Thanks for the suggestion and as my post mentioned I swapped out the old battery for the new one and this seemed to work - I didn't have the charger with me (at work). Cannot understand why it produce a memory error when the batter is drained.

Now Dell is sending my a replacement - not sure to take that or keep what I have.

Thanks
Mike

I just ordered a refurb X50v since they have the same warranty as new. I know the x51v is the latest and greatest but the only difference seemed to be Mobile 5 and more ram/rom...which I can deal with for now. I hope I don't have this issue too! However everyone says that Dell is great at returning stuff so that should be my one saving grace.

I too have had the memory error, I simply put it on the charger and then push the contact button and all is well. Dang alarms! Glad they are sending a new one, Dell is indeed good about that.

I would suggest that you keep your own one and send the refurb back. When you do so call dell up and give htem the heads up to not transfer your warrenty/service to the refurb's service tag

I had a wierd memory prob with a refurb also, posted under "x50v built in memory", 4 hours later on the phone my new one is on the way.

Lets see i paid for overnight shipping on the original and it took 8 days, they told me last night 3 to 5 business days so i should have it by christmas. If this one is bad i will never deal with dell again. I have a Palm M515 and if it wasnt for the problem with the XP computers I would still use it. that is one good pda.
