I've used a Headroom Total Airhead with my portable audio devices for a while (http://www.headphone.com/products/he...al-airhead.php). I use it to drive Etymotic ER-4s headphones. The combination is awesome with a portable CD or MP3 player.
There is also this little bad boy http://www.boostaroo.com/store_detail.php4?id=1
I was able to pick one up on ebay for $20, and what a difference it makes on noisy airplanes, or for devices with low output.

No, no, I want to build an amp into an external battery for my Ax! That way, it could power some modest-sized desktop speakers and not drain (nay, even recharge) my Axim.
THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES!!
That could be a big external battery if you want to power some speakers and charge your axim. Especially if you want the battery to last longer than 5 minutes :P
I have a radio shack headphone amp forkyfork, and let me say that with my sony 828 (?) earbuds, I have to turn it down because I am afraid I will go deaf.......
What was that?
Huh?

How does this type of amp sound with earbud headphones? Does it make a difference?
If you have $9.99 earbuds, don't bother. The earbuds will still suck -- they'll just suck less! On the otherhand, if you have high quailty in-ear headphones like those made by Etymotics, Sennseiser or Shure, the headroom amp I have makes a huge difference in clarity and imaging. the inboard headphone amps in most personal consumer audio devices are pretty horrible.

interesting that you need more power to these earphones considering that i can not use them on anything with any player at full volume...i even use them while mowing the lawn and only have my ipod on half volume
Another thing to note about these boosters...be careful since even though you are over power outside sounds...it can still cause nasty ear damage because of the volume levels involved
I personally use a boosteroo on airplanes with my aiwa headphones as my laptop out put is horrible
